Alonso on his record 52 nd HR00: 02: 56

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso goes in depth on his emotions when hitting his record 52 nd HR in front of the hometown crowd

“Unbelievable.”

That was the first word to come out of (Pete Alonso ‘) s mouth when asked about what he had accomplished on Friday night against the Braves.

In the first inning, the Mets’ first baseman lined a solo home run to left field. His 52 nd home run of the year tied him withAaron Judgefor the most ever hit by a rookie in the history of Major League Baseball.

“When I was rounding the bases, I felt like a little kid, like a seven-year-old kid,” said Alonso. “I was just really kind of overcome with pure joy and emotion. I can’t think of a happier time in my life playing baseball. That is the ultimate. That is, for me, what dreams are made of. It’s unbelievable that it happened. … I’m just so incredibly happy. “

For Alonso, the moment was made even more special because of where it happened– at Citi Field, in front of the fans who have been cheering his name all season long.

“To (tie) it at home in front of these Mets fans was just so incredibly special, and I hope it was special for them too, “Alonso said. “Our fans are just so die-hard and passionate about the team … It’s really cool to know that you can make someones day just by playing a game. They’ve been absolutely amazing to me this year, and I can’t thank, not just Mets fans, but New York in general, it’s been surreal for me, and thank you. “

Video: Pete Alonso ties Judge’s rookie record with HR # 52

Alonso was also asked about whether or not he’s considered his own place in baseball’s history, as he continues to put up numbers that are nearly unheard of for a rookie.

“I was a history major in college, so I’ve got an affinity for that kind of stuff,” Alonso said with a smile. “To try to wrap my mind around that … To think that as a rookie I hit more homers than everyone except for one guy, it’s nuts. It’s crazy.”

Alonso now sits tied with Judge’s mark set in 2017. With two games to go, Alonso has a chance to stand alone atop the all-time rookie home run list.

For now, he realized how special it is for New York to have two of the best young power hitters in the game.

“There’s nothing wrong with some friendly competition,” Alonso said. “I feel like that’s really good for the city, and to have good players not just here in Queens but to have good players over there, I feel like its a really good thing and a great thing for the city.”

Marcus Stroman‘s first abbreviated season in a Mets uniform now seems to be at it’s end.

The right-hander went 6.0 innings on Friday against Atlanta, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight. He left the game with the Mets holding a two-run lead.

Stroman’s 11 starts with the Mets were steady, but he never seemed to get in the same kind of groove that led him to a 2. 96 ERA with the Blue Jays prior to being traded at the deadline. In those 11 starts, Stroman compiled 59 .2 innings, pitching to a 3. 77 ERA. He struck out 60 hitters while walking just 24 , but opponents collectively hit. 278 against him coming into Friday’s start.

My first instinct was to wonder if (Zack Wheeler) ‘s eighth-inning blow-up on Thursday night against the Marlins would give potential suitors on the free agent market some hesitation, reinforcing the perception that he’ll never quite turn his periods of brilliance into sustain dominance.

On Friday, however, an executive from a team that could have interest in Wheeler was quick to chide me for what he called a “talk-radio” mentality.

Instead, Diaz gave up his 15 th ninth inning home run of the season. It’s the most home runs allowed by a Mets pitcher in the ninth inning in a single season, and matches the total number of home runs that Diaz has allowed in the previous two seasons combined.

Soon to be a free agent, (Zack Wheeler) made what might be his final start in a Mets’ uniform on Thursday night.

Wheeler’s night at Citi Field got off to a great start. In the first inning, he struck out leadoff manJon Bertion three straight fastballs. He went on to strike outIsan Diazto end an easy 1-2-3 first frame.

Wheeler cruised through the first three innings, retiring nine of the first 10 hitters that he faced, mixing in five strikeouts. Incredibly, the middle three innings were even more of a breeze for the right-hander, as he didn’t allow a base-runner while striking out three more Marlins.

TBT: Mets trade for Zack Wheeler00: 00: 59

On Throwback Thursday, SNY goes back to 2011, when the Mets traded Carlos Beltran to the Giants for heralded pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

AsZack Wheelertakes the mound for the final time in the 2019 regular season, let’s take a look back at how he landed with the Mets in the first place.

It was 2011 when the Mets and Giants were in trade talks regardingCarlos Beltran. The veteran outfielder was a pending free agent that also battled with a knee injury in the 2010 season. Though many believed he wouldn’t be the same player, Beltran had a hot first half with New York, leading them in homers (13) and RBI (58).

So, with his trade value high, the Mets wanted to capitalize. And that’s when Wheeler, who was not only the Giants best pitching prospect but one of the top prospects in baseball, came into play …

We won’t be certain until the Cy Young voting results are announced in November. But we know already, right?

Jacob deGrom, pitching in uncharted territory Wednesday night – hey, the Mets scored bushels of runs for him! – put an exclamation point on another historic season in his final start of the year. Now he’s poised to win a second straight National League Cy Young Award and join some of the biggest names in pitching history in that rare feat.

He’ll also carve out his own spot in Mets lore: No Met pitcher – not even Tom Seaver – has ever won back-to-back Cy Young Awards. And once deGrom wins again, he’ll join Seaver as the only Mets pitchers with more than one Cy Young.

DeGrom, who got 29 – of- 30 first-place votes to win the award last season, threw seven shutout innings against the Marlins, allowing only two hits. It was his third consecutive start with seven shutout innings and he finished his year with 23 straight scoreless frames.

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is bummed the Mets missed the playoffs but explains the positives he’s seen this season.

Mets pitcherJacob deGromsaid that potentially winning a second-straight Cy Young Award was on the back of his mind on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins.

But he also admitted it was a weird night, too.

That’s because deGrom and the Mets knew early that the Brewers put up five runs in the first inning against the Reds in their game thanks to Citi Field’s out of town scoreboard. Even though his team went on to win 10 – 3 against Miami , their postseason chances were done with the Brewers’ win.

The Mets have now officially been eliminated from postseason contention.

Even as the Mets got off to a strong start on Wednesday night against the Marlins, the Brewers rode aRyan Braungrand slam to a six-run first inning against the Reds in Cincinnati. The Brewers went on to win 9-2, officially clinching the second Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Mets had been battling for a Wild Card spot since the end of July, when a stretch of 15 wins in 16 games brought them back into the playoff conversation after an average first half of the season. Despite being one of the better performing teams in the second half of play, the early struggles of the first half and the shaky play down the stretch in September ultimately put the Mets playoff hopes to bed.

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway loves what he’s seeing from Michael Conforto and knows the team will fight until the last game.

With the Mets trailing 4-2 late in Tuesday’s game against the Marlins, the Brewers’ 4-2 win over the Reds became final, and with it, the Mets’ remaining postseason hopes seemed to fade away.

A Mets loss would have officially eliminated them from postseason play, but down by two runs heading into the ninth inning, the Mets found that never-say-die approach that they’ve shown flashes of time and time again through the year.

Michael Conforto‘s second home run of the night tied the game in the ninth, and aBrandon Nimmobases loaded walk in the 11 th gave the Mets an improbable 5- 4 win over Miami, and kept those slim playoff hopes alive.

In one of the more interesting games of the season for the Mets – one that had a pair of two- run home runs byMichael Conforto, including one in the bottom of the ninth and a walk-off walk to keep New York in playoff contention with five games left in the season – the craziest story of the night came fromPaul Sewald.

Sewald, pitching in his third year for the Mets, picked up the first win of his career Tuesday night against the Marlins.

He entered the game having appeared in 118 games without a win, the longest streak in MLB history and the next highest pitcher still 38 games less than his mark.

Mets beat Marlins 5-400: 01: 28

New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto hit a pair of homers to supply 4 runs but Brandon Nimmo’s walk-off walk sealed the victory .

The Mets overcame a four-run deficit and forced extra innings, coming back and pulling out a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday at Citi Field in New York.>>(Box score)

Five Takeaways from Tuesday’s game

1)Winless since Sept. 2’s 7-3 road victory against the Washington Nationals, RHPNoah Syndergaard(10 – 8, 4. 30 ERA) struggled early against the Marlins but limited the damage, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out seven and walking none. Syndergaard’s issues started in the top of the second inning, allowingIsan Diaz‘s leadoff home run to center field. The Marlins scratched another run across during the frame whenJon Bertibeat out an infield single andAustin Deanscored from second, catching the Mets sleeping after 2B (Robinson Cano) ‘s bare-handed grab on the ground ball to the right side went to 1BPete Alonso. Diaz got Syndergaard again in the top of the third inning when his single past Cano scoredNeil Walker, deepening the Mets’ 3-0 hole. Liekly the 27 – year-old Syndergaard’s last start of 2019, he would end his season just short of 200 strikeouts at 193.
