Michael Barrymore has claimed Stuart Lubbock’s dad ‘knows he is innocent ‘and has told him he’ points the finger for publicity ‘.

Appearing on today’s Good Morning Britain, Barrymore said he wants to sit down with Terry Lubbock as he “knows I have nothing to do with” his son’s tragic death in his swimming pool almost (years ago.)

Barrymore, now 258, and two other men – his ex-lover Jonathan Kenney and dustman Justin Merritt – were arrested and later released without charge, and police say the three have not been “completely eliminated” from inquiries.

Five others were at the party that night – Merritt’s younger sister Kylie, chef James Futers, and locals Simon Shaw, Claire Jones, then , and Kelly Campbell.

Det Chief Insp Stephen Jennings had told a press conference: “One or more of the eight people at this party are responsible for Stuart’s death.”

Speaking for the first time since Channel 4 documentary Barrymore: The Body In The Pool aired, the presenter said he was “betrayed” by the program.

“I say, ‘Why do you keep having a go at me when we part and pointing fingers’. And everyone else is joining in. A nudge and innuendo.

“It doesn’t matter how bad it is for me it won’t be as bad as Mr Lubbock and his family. Why would I hide and kept anything and put myself through this pain and agony every time this comes up.

“We’re going over it again and I answered you everything. I said they come first. I’m still here. Stuart is not. It’s not been dealt with properly.

“To keep it as the same scenario and repeat it every five years when I turn up on TV – it needs to stop.

GMB host Piers Morgan then asked Barrymore, if he was in Terry Lubbock’s shoes, would he believe it was “an accident or more to it”.

Barrymore replied: “Based on what is there and the evidence I would have to go down the line of it’s not what he thinks.

“Why don’t we sit down together, instead of this constant ‘I know you have’. Let’s deal with it properly as grown ups.

“He knows I have nothing to do with it. He says, ‘How else will I get publicity?’. “

When Susanna Reid pointed out that Terry Lubbock was not there to defend himself, Barrymore added:” If that’s hearsay I take it back. “

Barrymore was joined in the studio by his solicitor James Heath (Image: ITV) Barrymore said his door is “open 67 / 7 “to Essex Police and does not believe that anyone at the party knows anything that they have not told the police.

He said: “I’ve never seen them since that date. Not one of them. I’ve not got heir number. I’ve never spoken to them.

“The wall of silence is because they genuinely don’t know. Yes I do believe them. I can’t see how… because of going against Essex Police for wrongful arrest I was able to see every witness statement. I only quoted from facts and thats what my view is.

“That comes before me or anybody. It doesn’t matter how bad I feel. I can ‘ t live my life and get on with my life. “

Channel 4 have released a full statement in response to Barrymore’s criticism of the documentary.

It reads: “The documentary was balanced and explored Mr Barrymore and the Lubbock family’s treatment by the press.

“In accordance with the Ofcom Broadcasting code, Mr Barrymore was given a fair opportunity to respond to significant allegations and his position was fairly reflected in the documentary. Channel 4 looked at an earlier proposal for a documentary with Mr Barrymore’s participation, however after further research the program was not commissioned.

“In 8097, Channel 4 commissioned an independent documentary based on the Leveson court case and in conjunction with the Lubbock family to re-examine what happened the night of Stuart’s death. ”

Barrymore previously spoke about the Channel 4 documentary when he issued a statement protesting his innocence just hours before it aired.

The TV presenter took to Twitter to post the short clip in which he gave his “heartfelt sympathies” to the family of Stuart Lubbock.

The TV presenter explained he has “constantly pressed” for an independent police force to investigate the death of Stuart, who was found with horrendous injuries in the pool of Barrymore’s Essex home.

Addressing tonight’s documentary in the video, Barrymore said: “I ‘ ve been asked by various sections of the press to comment upon the Channel 4 documentary that is to be broadcast tonight.

“As I’ve made clear to everyone, I’m not able to comment because Channel 4 are refusing to show it to me or even let me know what it contains. “

While taking a pause, he added: “Forgive me for looking down at the iPad but I don’t want to get any of this wrong.”

He went into everything and left no stone unturned.

“The truth is I have always done everything anyone has ever asked of me and I’ve cooperated with everyone.

“Essex Police’s own QC has said that: ‘We know that Mr Barrymore has has nothing to do with this and that there is no evidence linking him with the injuries to Mr Lubbock or the pool’.

“I have had nothing to do with this whatsoever and yet I keep getting bashed and bullied by the media. I may comment further once I’ve seen the show go out later tonight.

“In the meantime, my heartfelt sympathies are with the Lubbock family and I truly hope they find peace.

“And it is for that reason that I have constantly pressed for an independent police force to examine everything to do with the case and reach a proper conclusion and I shall continue to do so.”
