DirectAccess is a feature introduced by Microsoft in Windows Server 2008 R2 that provides seamless and always-connected connectivity. When a user tries to connect, an IPsec encrypted tunnel is automatically established in the background to protect traffic.

Microsoft has decided to deprecate DirectAccess and recommends that Windows and Windows Server users migrate to Always On VPN. DirectAccess will be completely removed in subsequent versions of Windows.

This adjustment mainly affects enterprises using Windows Server server systems. Encrypted connections help improve server security, while Always on VPN is a new technology that uses better authentication protocols to enhance security.

Always On VPN is available for all supported versions of Windows and is supported by the UWP VPN plug-in. Third parties can also use this feature, so companies in need can install the plug-in to obtain this feature and continue to use encrypted security protocols for connections.

According to Microsoft's support document, Windows 11 24H2, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, and Windows Server 2025 no longer support DirectAccess. IT administrators should complete the migration as soon as possible, although the migration work may be troublesome.
