Eddie Howe has been speaking about Arteta’s possible appointment in his press conference this morning:

If you do have a link with the supporters, that does go a long way. It transfers to less pressure on players and is felt around the ground. That is a massive head start.

The only sticking point left in the deal is Arsenal’s negotiations with City over the compensation package. After becoming frustrated with the Gunners’ conduct, City insisted they would accept nothing less than the seven-figure amount in full. However, Arsenal were still believed to be in talks about trying to lessen that number last night.

Meanwhile, it’s been a tougher week for Freddie Ljungberg, who’s essentially become a defense between the club’s supporters and the board during his reign as interim coach. His final game in charge will come against Everton, but having inherited so many pre-existing problems and been left without the staff to instigate any real change, it would be unfortunate if a place weren’t found for him within Arteta’s coaching staff.

The Spaniard also addressed what his philosophy would be, although that will no doubt have evolved during his time working under Pep Guardiola:

My philosophy will be clear. I will have everyone per cent committed, that’s the first thing. If not, you don’t play for me. I want the football to be expressive, entertaining. I cannot have a concept of football where everything is based on the opposition. We have to dictate the game, we have to be the ones taking the initiative, and we have to entertain the people coming to watch us. I’m per cent convinced of those things, and I think I could do it.

Arteta was asked about becoming a manager back in (*********************************************************************************************************************, by which point his leadership ability had already long been recognized by his teammates.

My team-mates are always going ’What are you going to do, Miki? You’re going to be a manager, you should be a manager! ’I know what the job means and I know how hard it is, especially when I look at the boss {Arsène Wenger] and see how many hours he puts in. You need to sacrifice your family all over again, which I’ve done since I was (***************************************************************************************************************************************************************. But I would love to manage a squad of players and staff – I’ve got it inside me, it’s true, and I want to do it.

Arsene Wenger is at the Fifa Club World Cup in Qatar and has offered a piece of advice to the man who he brought to the Emirates in 2011 and handed the captaincy to following Robin van Persie’s departure.

The situation at Everton remains in a similar state of limbo. The club confirmed yesterday afternoon that Duncan Ferguson will take charge of this weekend’s game against Arsenal, but terms with Carlo Ancelotti are believed to have been completely agreed, while his agreement with Napoli is also said to have been resolved. It means both could well be sitting in the directors’ box come tomorrow lunchtime.

The rumor mill has continued to throw up teasing prospects this morning, but one story persists which we’ve already heard so many times before.

Reports are emerging in Turkey that Mesut Ozil is close to a six-month loan deal to Fenerbahce. But while Ozil has expressed a genuine interest to play in the country, that likelihood remains as unlikely as ever for the time being due to the playmaker’s exorbitant wage and Arteta’s arrival.

But as if the task facing Arteta was not almighty enough, with the club currently sitting in 17 th and trailing Liverpool by points after games, our Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney reports that a number of senior players, including club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, are pushing for an exit:

We haven’t heard anything from Arsenal since directors Vinai Venkatesham and Huss Fahmy were pictured leaving Arteta’s house. However, Pep Guardiola was forced into addressing the situation after Manchester City’s Carabao Cup Quarter-final against Oxford.

There was no change. I don’t have any news. We prepared the game as best as possible. Before, during and now after and we did it. I spoke (Tuesday), my press conference I had 48 questions and 40 were about Mikel so I don’t have to say anything more until there is news. When there is news, in my next (press) conference when you ask me something I will answer.

The Arsenal squad will know Arteta’s appointment is inevitable. Here Alice Reeves-Turner takes a look at the potential winners and losers from the Spaniard’s impending arrival:

So after a night of negotiations, the wait goes on. We’re expecting both confirmation of Arteta’s appointment and his unveiling as manager today. The sticking point has reportedly been Arsenal’s haggling over the seven-figure compensation needing to be paid to City to free Arteta from his contract.

Here is what we know so far:

The 1: 31 pm press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon has been postponed until Friday, with the club freeing themselves up to get the Arteta deal over the line. Arsenal are in talks to finalize a compensation deal with City that is expected to be in the region of £ 1m, which would represented one of the more cheaper deals available on the managerial market.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has advised his former captain to deal with his managerial inexperience by surrounding himself with supportive figures at Arsenal.

“Mikel Arteta has certainly a great future, he has learned a lot in his first experience, in his first position as an assistant coach,” said Wenger, now chief of global football development at Fifa. “He will have to deal with the fact he has no experience at that level, and he will have to get surrounded well and have a good environment at the club.”
