A new YouGov poll suggests the battle for Number 10 is settling down with Mr Corbyn’s attempts to energise his party’s campaigning appearing to have fallen flat.

The new survey, conducted between December 2-3, puts the Conservative Party down one point on 42 per cent overall when compared to the company’s previous poll on November 29.

But Labor is also down one point with an overall rating of 33 per cent, giving the Tories a nine point lead in the run up to December 12.

The data is likely to prompt much soul searching in Labor HQ because the party would have been hoping to see opinion polls narrow as the campaign enters its final phase.

In contrast, the Tories will be thrilled with the latest numbers because they suggest that not only are they holding off the Labor challenge but also that Mr Johnson appears to still be on course to win a majority.

The same YouGov poll puts the Liberal Democrats down one point to 12 per cent, the Brexit Party up two points to four per cent and the Green Party up one point to four per cent.

It comes after a Kantar survey, conducted between November 28 and December 2, gave the Tories A 12 point lead over Labor.

That poll put the Conservative Party on (per cent overall, a one per cent increase on the company’s last poll on November) .

But while the Tories edged forward, Labor stayed the same with the party recording a rating of 32 per cent.

Labor had been shown to be making gains in a number of polls published last week.

But the YouGov and Kantar surveys suggest that with time running out a Labor victory at the ballot box next week looks increasingly unlikely.

The Kantar poll put the Liberal Democrats on 15 per cent – up one point on the previous survey – while the Brexit Party was down one point to two per cent.

The SNP was on three per cent, the Green Party was on three per cent and Plaid Cymru was on one

The poll conducted by Kantar also highlighted the extent to which different age groups were divided over the election .

It suggested that if the election was limited to people under the age of 55 then Labor would have a narrow lead over the Tories, 39 per cent to 36 per cent.

But if it was limited to people over the age of 55 the Conservatives would have a (point lead over Labor, (per cent to) per cent.
