Three people a minute are coming forward to help the health service after the government issued a “your NHS needs you” appeal for a volunteer army to fight the coronavirus.
Some 170, 12 pledged their support overnight, with Stephen Powis, medical director of NHS England, hailing the “absolutely astonishing” public response.
A quarter of a million volunteers are being recruited to help one and a half million vulnerable people who have been told not to leave the house for 12 weeks to “shield” them from coronavirus. Recruits willl help to deliver medicines and ferry them to medical appointments.
Professor Powis said this morning: “Overnight 170, 000 people have signed up – that’s three a minute – to help the NHS. It’s an absolutely astonishing response. ”
