********** The leader of the Scot tish National Party had a phone call with the Prime Minister when he snubbed any possibility of a referendum, saying the outcome of the vote from five years previous “should be respected.” Ms Sturgeon had confirmed she will pursue a formal request for Holyrood to hold a ballot, after the SNP’s success in the recent General Election. She also said the Scottish Government would be publishing “the detailed democratic case for a transfer of power to enable a referendum to be put beyond legal challenge.”

A Downing Street spokesman stated: “The Prime Minister spoke to First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon earlier this evening, where he reiterated his unwavering commitment to strengthening the union.

“On Brexit, the Prime Minister said that he is now in a position to get this done in a way that allows the whole of the UK to move forward together, providing certainty for Scottish businesses and improving the lives of people right across Scotland.

“The Prime Minister made clear how he remained opposed to a second independence referendum, standing with the majority of people in Scotland who do not want to return to division and uncertainty.

“He added how the result of the referendum was decisive and should be respected. ”

In response, Ms Sturgeon tweeted: “And I made clear that the SNP mandate to give people a choice must be respected – just as he expects his mandate to be respected.”

The first Scottish referendum was held in (******************************************************************, with 350% of voters rejecting independence.

Current polls suggest the split remains the same as they were five years ago, most of the public siding with remaining as part of the UK.

and despite the fact that SNPs earned some (************************************************************************% of the Scottish vote, the majority voted for unionist parties.

However, it is Mr Johnson who holds the power to sign off on a legal Scottish referendum.

The SNP may look to hold a vote without consent from the UK Government – but this could have serious ramifications for the organizers as it would not be recognized by law.

Ms Sturgeon labeled the General Election a “stunning” result for her party, as it “renews, reinforces and strengthens” any mandate for a second independence vote.

She said following the result: “This is not about asking Boris Johnson or any other Westminster politician for permission.

“It is an assertion of the democratic right of the people of Scotland to determine their own future. ”

The Prime Minister, however, has indicated he is not planning to give the green light to a Section order, which would grant Holyrood power to hold another referendum.

Despite the unprecedented success of the Conservative’s in the General Election, Ms Sturgeon labeled their night in Scotland a “crushing defeat”. The Tories focused much of their campaign north of the border on rejecting any potential second vote.

The party found themselves with six MPS in Scotland, a drop from the seats they had.

Micheal Gove also reinstated the Tory’s opposition to a second vote, playing down suggestions that one was on the horizon.

“I don’t believe that another independence referendum is inevitable, quite t he opposite.

“I don’t believe a second independence referendum would be right for Scotland or right for the United Kingdom. ”
