EAST RUTHERFORD -Pat Shurmur is out as head coachof the New York Giants.

One of the NFL’s flagship franchises will now be hiring what will be its fourth head coach in six year s – fifth if you include Steve Spagnuolo’s four-game interim stint at the end of the (campaign following the firing of Ben McAdoo.

Just staggering for a team that has taken pride in continuity.

Staggering.

So who will be the candidates to replace Shurmur? Here are some to consider:

Matt Rhule

Current Baylor head coach is a builder of programs, having done so at Temple prior to his stint with the Bears. The 49 – year-old spent one season as the assistant offensive line coach on Tom Coughlin’s staff with the Giants in and is considered a rising star. He was a finalist for the Jets job last year and could emerge as leading candidate for Big Blue if his ideas for a staff and philosophical approach meshes with Dave Gettleman if he stays on as general manager.

Jason Garrett

The Cowboys are expected to part ways with Garrett, whose contract expires at the end of this season. He’s very familiar with Giants ownership having played quarterback here from – 03, and has strong New Jersey roots having grown up on the Shore. If Gettleman is retained, Garrett fits the mold of an old school coach who is definitely accustomed to yielding power to team brass, considering his time in Dallas with Jerry Jones. The questions with Garrett will be centered on criticism that he failed to get the most out of a talented roster on several occasions during his stint with the Cowboys.

Mike McCarthy

****************

The former Packers coach has tremendous pedigree when it comes to developing a quarterback named Aaron Rodgers, but their time together ended on a bad note last year . McCarthy was out of the league this season and reportedly has spent a lot of time trying to reinvent himself, embracing more of what works in the NFL today. It’s unclear if the Giants would be interested, and perhaps their 29 Games with McAdoo at the helm – he considers McCarthy a mentor – would lead them in another direction.

Dan Campbell

This one would be a bit of a sleeper as Campbell is currently serving as assistant head coach and tight ends coach with the Saints. He’s a favorite of Bill Parcells – whose opinion still holds some weight in the Giants’ building, provided he is asked to express it – and would be a great leader of a locker room. He’d have to build a staff with strong offensive and defensive coordinators. But Campbell started his career with the Giants and played here for four years, so the organization knows him.

Josh McDaniels

McDaniels was considered a finalist the last time the Giants searched for a coach, settling on Shurmur. He’s tried to rehabilitate his image from a failed stint as a head coach in Denver, and leaving the Colts at the alter after initially accepting the job that ultimately went to Frank Reich could work against him. There’s also the notion that he could wait out Bill Belichick for the New England gig, so this is a wild card. It’s hard to imagine McDaniels being willing to mesh with Gettleman, but the former did do extensive pre-draft work with Daniel Jones with the Patriots, so he could be intrigued by the Giants’ young quarterback.

Brian Daboll

Daboll’s resume includes five Super Bowl rings over two stints as a Patriots assistant under Belichick. He also won a national title on Nick Saban’s staff on Alabama. If those two coaching legends vouch for Daboll, that could go a long way. He’s currently the OC of the Bills and deserves credit for helping develop quarterback Josh Allen, who has led Buffalo to the playoffs.
