The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Sporting Lisbon star for some time now, and were expected to make a bid for him in the summer window.
United opted to splash the cash on £ 354 million Harry Maguire instead, but they’re still in the market for a midfielder, and Fernandes is at the top of their list.
Solskjaer was asked to comment on the club’s pursuit of the midfielder on Saturday.
And while he refused to discuss individuals by name, he admitted that he has the backing of the board to go out and get a player of his choosing.
“Bruno Fernandes? I can’t talk about individuals that play for other clubs, but I’ve got to say I do have backing,” said the Red Devils boss.
“We do have backing to do something if the right thing comes up in this window. The owners, Ed, they know what we’re building towards.”
Solskjaer was previously very dismissive of the speculation linking United with Fernandes.

“There is a lot of speculation all the time about us going to watch matches,” Solskjaer said.
“Where I have been and when I have been somewhere is irrelevant. He is another player at a different club who I can’t speak about.”
