NEW DELHI: On the 150 th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, his assassinNathuram Godsealso trended onTwitter. For much of the morning, the hashtagGandhi Jayantilorded over the microblogging site with a staggering 114 k tweets. Several other hashtags such asMahatma Gandhiwere also floated.
However by 5pm, pro-Godse hashtags started showing up on Twitter trends. The most prominent hashtag eulogising Gandhiji’s assassin was #GodseAmarRahe. While there were only 15 k tweets around the trend by 8pm, Godse’s name also trended with nearly 20 k tweets.
“If Godse had done the wrong thing by killing Gandhi, what would Gandhi have done? He would have allowed one more partition. Godse committed only one murder and was also sentenced to death, but because of Gandhi, there was a massacre of Hindus in Partition, should not Gandhi have been punished for that ?, ”posted VHP workerAbhishek Mishra.
