Paul Ince has launched a scathing attack on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United’s current situation.

United suffered their fifth straight match without a win as they were stunned byNewcastleon Sunday – Matty Longstaff netting the only goal at St James’ Park.

The result left the Red Devils 12 th in the Premier League table and just two points above the relegation zone – with their next fixture against table toppersLiverpoolafter the international break.

And United legend Ince has torn into the “total lack of leadership, quality and character in the team.”

“We’re only eight games into the season, so to be talking aboutManchester Unitedhaving to turn their season around is incredible, but that’s where they’re at, “Ince told Paddy Power.

Man Utd suffered a shock defeat to Newcastle this weekend

“You’re talking about a side that have just lost 5-0 toLeicester, and it’s embarrassing for Ole that Newcastle will have gone into that game thinking, we’re playing Manchester United at home, this is a great chance of turning things around and responding to that loss.

“That, for me, is a sign of how bad things have truly got – they thought Ole’s side were easy pickings, and they were right to.

“What we saw on Sunday was a Manchester United team completely void of confidence, but more worryingly, completely void of direction.

“There’s a total lack of leadership, quality and character in the team and at the club. All of the things you associate with a United team simply aren’t there.

Paul Ince has taken aim at the lack of quality and character in the Man Utd side

“I’m not here to call for any manager to be sacked – I’ve been there, and it’s not a nice feeling – but I will reiterate what I said before and say that the board should never have made the decision with Ole as quickly as they did.

“In my eyes, what had he achieved to deserve that job?

“He went toCardiffand took them down, then he went to Molde. So, what on earth makes the board think that he’s the right man for one of, if not the, biggest jobs in football? ”

Ince is not impressed by the lack of leadership at Man Utd

David de Gea gave an emotional interview to Sky Sports after the defeat at St James’ Park in which he insisted this was the worst period of his time at United.

And Ince has picked up on the Spaniard’s words and hit out at de Gea, who signed a fresh five year contract last month, as clueless and an inspirational leader.

“I watched David De Gea’s post-match interview and I was at a loss,” Ince said.

“ He’s meant to be one of the leaders, if that was Peter Schmeichel standing there, there’s no chance you’d have seen that interview.

“Rather than him addressing and recognizing where the team were going wrong, it just felt like ‘I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know. ‘

“This is one of the top players, the leaders at Manchester United, who has just signed a five-year contract!

“And he looks like he doesn’t have a clue what’s going on. If you’re a United fan listening to your goalkeeper, one of the main leaders in the team, and that’s the interview you here you’d be right to be disgraced.

“I’d be looking thinking, Jesus, he doesn’t have a clue what’s going on – I bet he’s regretting signing that contract.”
