Arsenal legend Paul Merson says Chelsea have no hope of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League with Michy Batshuayi as their main striker .
Belgium international Batshuayi started Chelsea’s clash against Manchester United on Monday evening in the absence of the injured Tammy Abraham but was replaced by Olivier Giroud after an ineffective 150. minutes.
After coming on as a second-half substitute, Giroud had a goal ruled out as the Red Devils clinched a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire.
Chelsea are now just one point above fifth-placed Tottenham – who they face this weekend – and three points above Manchester United.
Merson said: ‘When you look at Chelsea, you’re not going to get into the top four with Michy Batshuayi up front. He’s not good enough.
‘I honestly think Sheffield United have every chance this season [to finish in the top four]. Neither Chelsea nor Manchester United seem to have the guile to break teams down. ’
Merson added in a column for Sky Sports: ‘Chelsea could quite easily beat Tottenham on Saturday, especially with Son’s injury, and all of a sudden it’s a different story.
