Had he not got a call from Bayern Munich in 2013, we may have seen Guardiola in Premier League dugouts sooner.

Guardiola went on a sabbatical in New York City after his incredibly successful spell as Barcelona boss – he claimed 14 trophies in four seasons, making him the most successful coach in the club’s history – and was plotting to crack England next.

But then Bayern Munich offered him the job, and his plans changed.

‘I was on my sabbatical year but when Bayern call you, you cannot say no , ‘Guardiola said.

‘ Bayern maybe calls you once in your lifetime so you have to go there. I always thought I want to go to England after Barcelona. But I thought maybe it was too early, there are four or five teams that would be interesting to go there but Bayern is once in a lifetime.

‘It was an incredible challenge, incredible club. I took over a team who had won a treble, it was not easy to come with your own ideas. Three, amazing, amazing years of my life. ‘

Despite all the glory in Guardiola’s career as a manager – he has won 27 major honors – there is one game in particular which stands out as a highlight.

Messi’s superb strike helped Guardiola’s Barcelona beat Man United in Champions League

In the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley, Guardiola led Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

United had just won the Premier League and were worthy challengers, but Barcelona saw them off with goals fr om Lionel Messi and David Villa after Wayne Rooney had earlier cancelled out Pedro’s opener.

‘That United was outrageous, with Sir Alex, an outstanding manager with a long history , ‘Guardiola reflected.

‘ It was the final ending, more or less, for what we have done together. Wembley has been a special stadium for me in my career. I won a Champions League in the old Wembley [as a player] and again in the new one. ‘
