Peter Kay's secret gestures as viewers worry about his appearance for Big Night In – Mirror Online, Mirror.co.uk

Peter Kay returned to TV screens last night for the first time in months to introduce his updated (Is This The Way To) Amarillo video for the BBC’s Big Night In.

Wearing sunglasses and a big hat, Peter sent his love to the UK and told them his motivation for recreating the mimed video to pay tribute to heroic keyworkers keeping the country going during the coronavirus pandemic.

” years ago I did a sketch for Comic Relief called Is This The Way To Amarillo and I never imagined that it would go down so well and make everyone happy, “he said while holding his ice lolly aloft.

” And I thought, what a perfect time to recreate it again.

“So we’ve asked a lot of you to film yourselves and send it in and listen , if you can help tonight there’s a number on screen.

“If you can’t, then don’t worry about it. You ‘ve got enough go ing on. “

Here, body language expert Judi James gives her opinion on the secret signs behind Peter’s rare appearance …

Peter Kay gave a rare appearance on Thursday’s Big Night In

The contrast with the Peter we got to see next during his Amarillo song was acute but that was recorded fifteen years ago and we’re now seeing a man who is presumably out of role and being himself during the lock-down.

It’s hard to Compare Peter’s body language with a ‘norm’ as he’s always been seen in role or during some high-energy, hilarious appearance on chat shows. His eyes are hidden by the shades here, too, masking what could have been some of the biggest non-verbal clues about his feelings, and it’s hard to know if the loud shirt and big hat were worn to be funny or just to reflect his actual mood.

Comedians often do change appearance and behavior off-stage and it might be wrong to expect the ‘cheeky chappy’ persona to be / 7.

His pace of speech was slow and the signature puckered, boyish grin was replaced by some subtler rounding of the cheeks. When he did throw a wide smile at the end, it did admittedly look rather forced and over-congruent rather than a sign of genuine humor.
