Sony has announceda new partnership with the United Nationsto help prevent environmental issues. Playing for the Planet is a new initiative formed by the UN Environment committee and leading games industry figures, and it’s all in aid of sustainability.
As PlayStation president Jim Ryan writes, the company itself has been making efforts to lower its impact on the environment. Later PS4 models have a reduced rate of power consumption, and it sounds like the PS5 will be even more eco-friendly. “I am also very pleased to announce the next generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W),” Ryan says. “If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1, 00 0 US homes. “
He also pledges to monitor the carbon footprint of PlayStation’s operations department and data centers. More interestingly, it sounds like the company is committed to educating people about climate change, too. “We have committed to working with the industry and climate experts to develop reference information for use by game developers that wish to include sustainability themes in games. In addition, we will investigate potential PS VR applications that can raise awareness of climate issues and climate experts . “
