Polling Guru exposes key reason Labor right to be 'nervous' as party set for 36-year low – Express, Express.co.uk


POLLING guru Sir John Curtice claimed Labor Party MPs are understandably “nervous” at the prospect of a general election as polls put the party at a 36 – year low in support among voters due to Brexit.

The polling expert said latest polls have placed the10 – points behind Boris Johnson due to confusion over their position on (Brexit) . Sir John pointed out MPs have been right to express nervousness at the prospect of a general election after the Prime Minister announced he would table a motion to secure a vote on Monday. Speaking to BBC News, the pollster said: “The Labor Party is 10 – point behind the Conservative Party in the polls, they are at 25 percent.

“That’s even less than the 28 percent they got in 198, which is their all-time low.

“They are led by the most unpopular leader of the Opposition ever and theand voters don’t understand what the party position is. “

He added: “You can understand why Labor MPs might be a little nervous against that backdrop.”

Mr Johnson announced his plans in the aftermath of Parliament voting down his proposed three-day timetable aimed at fast-tracking the Withdrawal Agreement Bill ( WAB) through the Commons.

Sir John suggested polls have been pointing at a potential Conservative victory but warned the Government could face strong resistance from both the Liberal Democrats and the Brexit Party.

He continued: “If we look at the polls as they currently stand, you can see why he is minded to go for it. On average, the Conservatives areand some polls put the figure even higher than that – some reckon it’s as much as 15.

“But all the figures, on any reasonable assumption, point to a majority Conservative Government and probably one with a sufficient majority that Mr Johnson will be able to get his Brexit deal through the House of Commons with relative ease.

“Certainly much greater ease than he faces at the moment.

“That said, we have to remember his party will be expected to lose ground in Scotland, will be expected to lose ground to the Liberal Democrats. “

The polling guru added: “If the leader of the Labor Party were to fall back in that 10 – point lead, then he could find himself facing a hung Parliament.

“The crucial battle, in truth, is going to be between Boris Johnson and. “

The Prime Minister urged MPs to back his motion and “take responsibility” for the task British voters gave them at the 2016 referendum.

Under the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, Boris Johnson would need a two-thirds majority in Parliament for an election to be triggered.
