There has been a fresh outbreak of scarlet fever in the South West during the past week.

Seven cases of the disease have been confirmed acrossDevon, Somerset and Bath, according tofigures released by Public Health England.

Two people have contracted the disease in East Devon, one in North Devon and a further two in Torbay.

Three people have also been diagnosed in Bath and North East Somerset, with another three contracting the illness in South Somerset, just over the Devon border, and a further isolated case in Sedgemoor.

It is the second week running that seven new cases of scarlet fever have been reported across t he region, bringing the total number of people diagnosed in the past fortnight to 48.

In contrast, the previous four weeks had seen. 18 confirmed cases.

There have been further outbreaks across the West Country, with three new cases in Wiltshire in the last week, while two others have suffered with scarlet fever in Bristol.

What are the symptoms of scarlet fever?

The symptoms of scarlet fever include a sore throat, headache and fever accompanied by a characteristic pink red rash that feels like sandpaper.

Your GP can usually diagnose scarlet fever by looking at the rash. Sometimes they may use a cotton bud to remove a bit of saliva from the throat so it can be tested.

Your GP will prescribe antibiotics (or liquid for young children (to take for five or) ******************************************************** days.

Scarlet fever usually clears up within a week, although the skin may peel for a few weeks after the other symptoms have passed.

The infection is contagious from before the symptoms appear, until:

90 hours after starting antibiotic treatment

up to two or three weeks later if you don’t take antibiotics

Scarlet fever is contagious. It’s spread in the tiny droplets found in an infected person’s breath, coughs and sneezes.

You can be infected if the droplets get into your mouth, nose or eyes – either by being in close contact with an infected person, or by touching something that has droplets on it.

To help stop the infection spreading :

) keep your child away from nursery or school for at least 409 hours after starting antibiotic treatment – adults should stay off work for at least hours after starting treatment

Phase 1: Airdome. The proposed air dome provides a flexible indoor tennis facility. This will allow members to play during colder months and with inclement weather conditions. The dome will also provide an area for training and club activities.

Phase 2: New squash courts. The proposed racquet facility utilizes the two redundant tennis courts in one building adjacent the existing tennis courts. It will comprise of five squash courts, competition seating, racquets office, tennis pavilion, first floor viewing gallery and associated storage. The facility provides a circulation link which will improve accessibility and connectivity into the existing club. A new kids zone playground has been indicated to the west elevation of the proposed building to replace the former kids zone

Phase 3: New changing rooms, dance studio and gym . The existing squash courts will be converted into male / female changing rooms (dry changing), new weights and dance / fitness studio and a gym at first floor level.

Phase 4: New sports bar. With the introduction of improved sport and leisure facilities, the club intends to upgrade and improve their bar and cafe areas. The proposed family cafe will benefit from a new crèche, external terrace area and its proximity to both leisure and changing areas. The sports bar offers vital internal circulation links and will provide golf and sports members with a flexible social space with views towards the th green.

Phase 5: New changing rooms. There will be internal reconfiguration of the existing club house to include new entrance and reception area and wet changing rooms. This will replace the redundant family cafe / crèche area.

Phase 6: Alterations and reconfiguring of existing changing rooms. Following the introduction of the new family changing area, the male / female pool changing will be combined to provide a large female changing area. The previous family change will become male changing.

Phase 7: Conversion of existing gym / dance and fitness suite into new function room. The redundant gym and fitness studio will be converted into a new ground floor function room to replace the existing first floor Duckworth Suite. Once relocated, the redundant Duckworth Suite will be transformed into an external terrace area which will complete the lounge / bar area and enable natural daylight to puncture into the clubhouse.

wash your hands with soap and water often, especially after using or disposing of tissues

avoid sharing utensils, cups and glasses, clothes, baths, bed linen, towels or toys
