MUMBAI: A day after Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress’ draft common minimum program (CMP) was finalized, Sharad Pawar said on Friday the three would soon form a government that would complete its full five-year term, and there was no question of mid-term polls inMaharashtra.
However, Pawar remained non-committal on the issue of power-sharing, especially the post of CM, saying talks were on at different levels and a decision would be taken at an appropriate time.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said the general consensus was that the CM’s post should be given to Sena, while state Congress chiefBalasaheb Thoratsaid these decisions would be taken in Delhi. Pointing out that Sena had walked out of its alliance with BJP, Malik said: “We must maintain the dignity and respect of Shiv Sena.”
On Saturday, a high-level delegation of the three parties would meet governor BS Koshyari, but their leaders maintained the meeting would be to seek immediate relief for farmers affected by the unseasonal rain and not about government formation.
The NCP chief is being seen as the driving force behind the state’s first coalition of parties with contrasting ideologies.
The drive to form government took a breather on Friday after marathon meetings over the last two days saw the draft CMP thrashed out. It will pick up pace from Saturday, with Pawar and Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray meeting here. The NCP president will meet Sonia Gandhi’s trusted aide Ahmed Patel in New Delhi on Monday to finalize the alliance. “After the preliminary talks, we expect Patel, Pawar and Thackeray to meet Gandhi on November 20 or 21, ”said a senior Congress leader.
Sena MPSanjay Rautwent beyond Pawar’s five-year government promise and said Shiv Sena will rule over Maharashtra for at least 25 years. “We will have the best of administrators and experts and, as such, it should not be difficult for us lead the state for two and half decades,” said Raut, who celebrated his birthday on Friday.
Speaking about the Raj Bhavan visit, Malik said the team will bring to the governor’s notice the collapse of administration and the failure to provide financial assistance to farmers affected by unseasonal rains. “We feel that after imposition of President’s rule, entire administration has collapsed. Despite announcement of Rs 10 , 000 for farmers, so far, no funds have been released and financial assistance for poor patients from CM relief fund too has been stopped. We demand that the governor personally take note of these crucial issues, ”he added.
In Nagpur, Pawar tackled the question of Sena’s Hindutva ideology, and said: “My colleagues discussed the CMP with leaders of Congress and Shiv Sena; we are not against any religion, but we certainly insist on secularism. I am not sure of the discussion on this issue among the allies. ”
Reacting to former CM Devendra Fadnavis’ comment that the grouping will not survive its contradictions, he quipped: “I know Devendraji for some years, but I did not know he is a student of astrology too. I am reminded of his lines, ‘Mee punha yaeen, Mee punha yaeen, Mee punha yaeen (I’ll come back)’, ”prompting laughter.
On Friday, state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil reiterated the next government will be formed by his party, leading to Thorat shooting back: “In my opinion, Fadnavis must now prepare himself for sitting in the opposition. ”
On sharing of portfolios, senior leaders were non-committal. “It is too early to comment. We expect they will be finalized after formation of government, ”said a senior Congress leader.
Significantly, NCP leaderPraful Patelhas been conspicuous by his absence during the hectic parleys. After he read out a policy statement in the presence of Pawar and Ahmed Patel on Wednesday, Patel hasn’t been part of the CMP deliberations.
