A Christmas advert for a family-run shop in Wales has gone viral – despite only costing £ 100 to make.

The video for Hafod Hardware in Rhayader features a young boy running the store, helping customers and putting up Christmas decorations.

Thomas Lewis Jones, who owns the shop, says he has been “overwhelmed with nice emails and messages from all over the world” since the video went viral.

Set to Andrea von Kampen’s cover of Forever Young, the advert shows Mr Jones’ two-year-old son Arthur getting ready and heading out for work.

Arthur dons an apron and sets about cleaning the hardware shop, stacking shelves and offering a cheery thumbs-up to customers.

The child takes a break to read to his teddies before gift-wrapping an item for a customer.

At the end of the day, he goes to pick up a Christmas tree and transforms into his father, with a slogan encouraging viewers to “be a kid this Christmas”.

The advert has had more than 70, 000 views on YouTube and has garnered international media attention.

Some fans have likened it to the John Lewis Christmas adverts, despite its low budget.

Twitter user Father Didymus wrote: “I don’t even know who Hafod Hardware is, I don’t know where they are, but this is really lovely and deserves to go a bit viral. “

Justine Rush wrote: “This Christmas ad brought a tear to my eye. Well done Hafod Hardware. Enjoy and season’s greetings.”

Hafod Hardware’s owner said: “It has been crazy … we’ve been overwhelmed with nice emails and messages from all over the world.

” The only thing we had to pay for was getting our singer into the music studio and paying the sound engineer.

“Everyone you see in the video is my family, there’s four generations featured in the video and it was made with the help of my best friend Josh Holdaway, who is a filmmaker. “

He continued: “We’ve done adverts for the last two years, this is the third instalment. Arthur features in all the adverts.

” This year we wanted to just do something that was quite simple to film that had a nice message and story.

“People have been coming in this morning saying congratulations … they’ve been bringing in bottles of champagne for us to say well

“The locals are incredible, they’re our bread and butter, we’re very lucky to have the community we have here in Rhayader.”

Mr Jones said the aim was to encourage people to support local businesses over Christmas.
