
Jo Johnson could have gone quietly at the next election with a simple letter of resignation.Instead he told the world that he faced a choice between “family loyalty” and “national interest”– and, by implication, national interest won. Why, if he disagrees so much over Brexit with his brother Boris, did he agree to serve in his Cabinet in the first place? How does it serve the public’s interest to walk away from Parliament rather than stay and fight for what he believes in? As many joked, here was a rare example of someone quitting politics to spend less time with their family.
