If you’re seriously deficient in any one of those areas , it’s going to be tough sledding.
“By bringing him in, we felt he could be a disruptive force inside. He has been.” Gettleman admitted that the trade was made to evaluate how Williams, a six-year veteran would fit in the Giants’ scheme and culture.
Couldn’t have have been done by watching film, analyzing the analytics data of Williams’ performance and speaking to coaches who worked with Williams in the past?
As misguided and wasteful as Gettleman’s line of thinking is, the Giants’ contingency plan if Williams signs elsewhere shows how out of touch Gettleman is with today’s NFL.
“If we hold our water, we’ll get a third-round comp [ensation] pick. ”Gettleman said. That isn’t entirely true.

for safety Landon Coll ins because the Giants signed wide receiver Golden Tate and outside linebacker Markus Golden last offseason, and Tate’s contract did not offset Collins’ deal. To get the comp pick, Gettleman must decline to spend money to improve the roster, or stick with the roster and augment it with the (draft class.) ******************
As much as he believes Williams “wants to be here,” Gettleman said the Giants wanted to have the first crack at him, so trading for Williams “was worth the squeeze.” He added: “We felt good about him. He did what we wanted him to do. ”
If Williams wanted to play for the Giants, the team is positioned financially to have signed him in March and retained a top – 85 pick in the NFL Draft to continue building a roster that has won just nine games in two seasons.
