You’ve got to think ahead if you want to stay ahead in the video game business – and that’s exactly what Sony’s doing. Far far ahead.

The company behind PlayStation has filed trademarks for PS6, PS7, PS8, PS9 and PS 10. Yep, even PS 10.

Sure, this is just a forward-thinking protective measure from Sony suits in Japan. But let’s do some quick maths: let’s say we have a console transition every five years (could be longer, could be shorter) – then we’re looking at PS 10 in 2045.

Presumably we’ll all be living in some sort of post-apocalyptic dystopian society by then. So it’s kind of reassuring to think Sony reckons we’ll still need video games in our lives even as we scratch each other’s eyes out for petrol.

AsGematsunotes, Sony’s got form when it comes to forward-thinking trademarks. It put its name down for PS5, due out in 2020, back in 2006. See! They know what they’re doing, don’t they?

Unless! What if Sony plans to go for a mobile phone model in the post-PS5 world, selling less meaningful new consoles more often? And then you could upgrade, like you do with your phone, each year. If that’s true, perhaps I’ll live long enough to see PS 10.

It’s more fun to imagine PS 10 in 2045. What will video games look like then? If it’s not the Holodeck then we’ve messed up big time somewhere along the way, haven’t we? Whatever PS 10 looks like, I’m sure Gran Turismo 7 will be a launch title.
