Speaker John Bercow finally silenced in the Commons as he loses his voice – MPs ERUPT – Express, Express.co.uk


The Speaker was opening the parliamentary session on Thursday when his voice cracked. Mr Bercow attempted to bellow ‘order’ but his voice was croaky as he struggled to speak. But he was quick to assure those present “it would not last long”, much to the amusement of those in the chamber.

Opening the Commons the Speaker said: “Order. Questions to the Secretary of State for Digital Culture Media and Sport.”

But his voice was broken and those in the chamber could not stifle their laughter.

To which Mr Bercow quipped: “It won’t last long, don’t worry.”

But later in proceedings, Mr Bercow’s voice continued to crack and Twitter soon erupted as users took to the platform to mock the Remainer.

One user claimed it would make Boris Johnson’s life a lot easier.

Some else wrote: “John Bercowlosing his voice may be the best and worst thing to ever happen. “

Others were more sympathetic.

One said: “Awww John Bercow has lost his voice.”

And another user wrote: “Get well soon John Bercow.”

The news comes as Boris Johnson plans togather senior ministers in Downing Street to discuss the detail of his “fair and reasonable ”New Brexit plan to scrap the Irish backstop.

The much-maligned mechanism would be replaced with a border down the Irish Sea, under Boris Johnson’s new plans.

The Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay is expected to lead the Commons debate at roughly 11. 30 am

During the debate MPs will be given an opportunity to raise urgent questions about the Government’s new Brexit proposals, which have been met with varying degrees of enthusiasm on all sides of the debate.

The ERG’s Bernard Jenkin admitted that although the Liberal Democrat defectors were unlikely to come around and vote for the plan, his group of staunch eurosceptics

He told Sky News: “We will support it. But the question is whether other people in the Commons who say they support leaving the European Union whether they will support it.

“It is quite obvious the Labor Party is still going to reject it. “

“Not one of them has told me they would not consider supporting it.”
