After a successful Ashes campaign where he racked up 774 runs in four Tests against England, Steve Smith was dismissed for a duck as he returned to the Sheffield Shield on Thursday.
Smith scored two hundreds and a double hundred in the Ashes series at a Bradman-esque average of 110. 57 a s he finished the series with scores of 144 & 142; 92; 211 & 82; 80 & 23. In the process, he also surpassed India captain Virat Kohli as the top ranked batsman in the ICC Test Rankings.
However while batting for New South Wales, Smith was removed for a fifth-ball duck by Queensland and American pacer Cameron Gannon as the Australian edged a wide ball to Joe Burns at the slip.
This was Smith’s first duck in first class cricket since November 2016.

Gannon, who got the precious wicket of world’s best Test batsman, was banned from bowling after his action was found illegal. However, the 30 – year-old returned with a changed action and also made his international debut for the United States in the Americas qualifier for the ICC T 20 World Cup.
Returning to Test cricket in the Ashes series after serving one-year ban for his involvement in the ball-tampering incident, Smith became the highest run-scorer in a single Test series in the 21 st century. Incidentally, on his way to 774 runs, Smith went past his own record of scoring 769 runs against India during the 2014 – (Border-Gavaskar series).
