****************** A TORNADO has hit the left Surrey town of Chertsey this morning stripping tiles from rooftops and sparking bewilderment and panic from residents.

Images show houses in both Chertsey and Shepperton with tiles stripped from roofs and debris in roads and gardens, with the Met Office even confirming the shocking incident on their Twitter page. They said: “There have been reports of a tornado in Chertsey, Surrey this morning. The radar image on the left shows the heavy shower that would have caused it.(“The Doppler”) image on the right shows relative motion of rain droplets; the circled area highlights the rapid circulation. ”(The Met Office also posted pictures to accompany the tornados.Residents posted images and videos onto Twitter as they wait for the tornado to pass from their homes.

Runnymede Police said in a statement they had “numerous reports” of fallen trees(Image: TWITTER)

It was posted by Hilary Cantor, who posted a caption with the video which also showed flooding.She said: “Our back garden in Chertsey. Sewage flooding and toilets out of action. Env. Agency budget cut after last flooding just 6 years ago #flooding. ”Runnymede Police said in a statement to the London Evening Standard that they have received “numerous reports” of fallen trees while roads have been closed.

The statement added: “Please respect road closures to allow our partners to clear them; stay aware of possible further trees falling; drive carefully. ”

Despite torrential rain and brutal winds, Christmas Day for many in the south will be relatively dry. In Scotland, with plunging temperatures, a white Christmas is a possible outcome.
