Syria: 70,000 people flee fighting in as opposition to Turkish offensive grows – Sky News, Sky.com

More than 70, 000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Syria, United Nations’ officials have said, as Turkish forces pushed further into the northeast of the country.

Residents from Ras Al-Ayn and Tal Abyad have been displaced by the escalating violence in the region, the World Food Program said.

People fled with their belongings loaded into vehicles, or on foot, and the UN refugee agency has warned tens of thousands of people are on the move seeking safety.

Nearly half a million people near the border are at risk, aid agencies warned, in scenes similar to those from a few years ago when civilians fled the Islamic State group militants.

Camps sheltering displaced people are to be evacuated or moved after being shelled, Kurdish authorities have said.

More than 7, 000 displaced people are to leave the Mabrouka camp, near the Turkish border, to a location close to Hasaka City to the south, while a camp sheltering 13, 000 people in Ain Issa could also be re-located.

Turkey has said its controversial offensive, now in its third day, is aimed at attacking Syrian Kurdish fighters it sees as terrorists linked to a Kurdish insurgency within Turkey and necessary for its national security.

Turkish forces suffered a first military casualty since the campaign began, its defense ministry said on Friday morning, announcing that the soldier had been “martyred”.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said 22 of its fighters were killed on Wednesday and Thursday.

…. We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!

Ankara claimed to have “neutralized” 49 “terrorists”, bringing the total killed so far to at least 277, whilesix civilians in Turkeyand seven in Syria have also died.

As the impact of Turkey’s campaign intensifies in the region, opposition to the attack is growing.

Many believe that by pulling its troops out, the US abandoned the Syrian Kurdish militia who were a key US ally in the campaign that brought down the Islamic State group in Syria.

Donald Trump, responding to widespread criticism at home and abroad over the unexpected withdrawal of US troops, tweeted that Washington had either military, financial or diplomatic options to resolve the crisis.

The president has lost the support of some congressional Republicans, among them Representative Liz Cheney, whoe tweeted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan should “face serious consequences for mercilessly attacking our Kurdish allies in northern Syria”.

Overnight, the United Nations Security Council failed to agree on an approach to the Turkish action, with Europeans demanding a halt to military action and Syria’s ally Russia calling for “restraint” and “direct dialogue” between the two countries.
