A bridge in has collapsed onto fishing boats leaving multiple people trapped underneath.

Dramatic footage shows the Nanfang’ao Bridge in Yilan Count, Taiwan fall into the river – just after a large oil tanker passed along it.

The tanker caught fire after crashing to the ground in the incident – which took place at 9. (am local time.)

Later pictures show a tanker had smashed into the bridge structure with smoke billowing from the cab.

Despite the dramatic nature of the collapse, state media reported no casualties, with three Filipinos suffering from minor injuries.

Local reports say three fishing boats were underneath the bridge when it fell – with people still ‘trapped in the rubble.’

Su’ao Township chief Lee Ming-che confirmed people five have been taken to hospital, with six still trapped.

The bridge – completed in 1999 – is said to be the only single arch structure in the South Asian country.

It was said to have been ravaged by typhoon Mitag, which swept through the area on Monday bringing 162 kph winds.

No cause for the collapse has been officially released.

Footage of the collapse shows a tanker traveling along the span of the bridge before it starts rocking – before the whole structure crashes into the river.

Authorities have pressed soldiers into the rescue effort and set up an emergency center to run the operation.
