Spurs have played more away games than some of the other teams with the most defeats but few would have predicted they would have had such a bad record at the start of the year.

They have won only five of their 19 Premier League games away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and drawn four.

It must be said that Tottenham did reach the Champions League final thanks to vital away victories in Dortmund and Ajax, with the latter being their last away win.

Spurs’ semi-final away win in Amsterdam came after five straight defeats on the road with Southampton, Liverpool, Manchester City x 2 (one in the Champions League) and Bournemouth all getting the better of them.

Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Co would be ninth in the Premier League if the campaign started in January with the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham and Leicester above them.

Pochettino admitted after their most recent defeat that his side are in a rut which they need to snap out of.

‘We are in a period where it’s a bit tough for us,’ said the Tottenham manager. ‘But we keep working to find a solution.

‘ When this type of thing happens it’s about staying clear and fresh and calm. We’re trying to find solutions and we only need time.

‘We talked a lot in pre-season. We have experience in football and it’s so important that the feelings were how I explained them in pre-season – but now it’s not about what I said in pre-season.

‘I knew it would be a tough situation. When you have an unsettled squad always it’s difficult and you lose time. And then you need time to recover the time you lose. That’s where we are.

‘Our performances are good but you need this extra, mental connection; it’s the energy to be all together, not to have different agendas in the squad. We need time to build the togetherness you need when you are competing at this level. ‘

Spurs will be hoping to end the curse on October 5 when Tottenham face Brighton in their next away game.
