England were always coming to bully and muscle Wales out of the contest at Twickenham but Wayne Pivac’s men refused to meekly bow out of the fight.
What ensued was an uncompromising, full-blooded affair that left bodies strewn over the pitch and Wales’ treatment room full.
Dillon Lewis had to be replaced at the break, having suffered an ankle injury in the first half. It left Leon Brown facing the prospect of minutes at Twickenham.
Around midway through his efforts, he threw himself at the feet of Kyle Sinckler close his own line. A ferocious collision that sent the English tight-head spiralling to the ground.
In showing complete disregard for his own well-being, Brown picked up a painful looking shoulder injury. He bravely rose to take his place in the defensive line but ushered his team-mates inside him to get away from the action.
Had England attacked there, he was a sitting duck. As it transpired, England had joy elsewhere, with Manu Tuilagi crossing on the far side.
Brown received lengthy treatment as Owen Farrell lined up the conversion. An official ran onto the field to instruct referee Ben O’Keeffe that a complicated situation was developing.
With Wales’ other tight-head Lewis already out of the game , if Brown left the field injured also, the game would go to uncontested scrums and Wales would be forced down to (men.)
Brown continued, but you feared he would not be long for the game. His arm hung low as he clutched his shoulder. Remarkably, he finished the game and continued to scrummage, carry, and hit rucks.
