This Is Usreturned with a bang last night. Continue reading to learn why fans are divided on the premiere. Warning: spoiler alerts ahead.

Dan Fogelman, the creator ofThis Is Us, already gave fanshints about what’s to comethis season ahead of last night’s premiere. The audience knew afterwatching the trailerfor Season 4 they were going to meet new characters outside of the Big Three – Kevin (Justin Harley ), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) – and their parents Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) among other supporting characters.

But they may not have expected just how many twists and turns the writers put in one episode. Viewers went from “Who are these people?” To “How did I not see that coming?” Over the course of the premiere.

Fans apprehensive about new characters

Jack met Rebecca’s parents for the first time during the premiere and fans got to learn how Jack met his future best friend, Miguel (Jon Huertas), who later became – spoiler alert – Rebecca’s second husband after Jack died.

But most of the episode focused on the introduction of new characters. And fans weren’t loving it at first. “Too many new characters,” one person shared on Twitter while another asked, “Who ARE all these new people ??? !!! I miss the big 3. ”

Understandably, fans wanted to see characters from Season 1 after being left on a big cliff hanger in at the end of Season 3.

“I don’t wanna sound greedy but WHERE ARE RANDALL AND BETH?” Read one tweet.

Fogelman, who tweeted during the show’s premiere, said he enjoyed watching fans “react in real time” to the twists and turns in the episode.

Tonight was a highlight of my weird professional career. Watching our amazing audience react in real time. Watching them change. Move. Feeling such pride in our team. We will kill ourselves to complete these stories properly these next few years.

What a ride.# ThisIsUs

By the end of the episode , fans had their questions answered.

Viewers loved the big reveal

It wasn’t until the end of the episode that storylines began connecting for the audience. Fans share their amazement on Twitter with comments such as, “MY MIND IS JUST BLOWN,” and “Loved the show tonight.”

Fans appreciated the slow burn of the episode, focused more on the journey and not necessarily having all the answers.

“I will admit the first hour I was confused and then the last 8 minutes I was bawling my eyes out, had goosebumps all over and FINALLY got it lol, ”one wrote.

“I knew they all had to be connected somehow. Nice reveals at the end, ”another said before adding,“ I’m excited for this season! ”

Moore tweeted during the episode saying even she didn’t see certain things coming. This coming someone who has admittedto knowing how the series will endmust mean there are plenty more didn’t-see-that-coming moments ahead.

Viewers were quick to say they weren’t so sure about the episode in the beginning – and to be honest, we weren’t either – but, in the end, we enjoyed learning about the new characters and their connections to ones we already know and love.

One person called said the episode had “simply spectacular writing,” calling it “so careful and detailed and patient.”

Another said seeing Ventimiglia and Moore as Jack and Rebecca held the episode together.

“It was the grounding of early Jack & Rebecca in the episode that kept me calm while also seeing people I had no idea who they were or what was going on… until, you pulled them all together, ”before adding,“ Just like the 1st episode of the series. That “aha” at the end that hooked me. ”

Another person summed up the episode pretty succinctly.

They tweeted:

“Me at the beginning of the ep: who the hell are these people

me at the end: oh they are my FAMILY and i would DIE for them ok #ThisIsUs. ”

We know we’ll be watching next week’s episode ofThis Is Usbecause we can’t wait to find out more about the Pearson family.
