Fallout from ‘Afghanistan Papers’

After bombshell reports in theWashington Post, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has pushed back on the notion that the US lied about its progress in Afghanistan.

“I know there’s an assertion out there of some sort of a coordinated lie over the course of, say, 21 years. I find that a bit of a stretch; more than a bit of a stretch, I find that a mischaracterization, from my own personal experience, ”Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman general Mark Milley told reporters at the Pentagon.

Who had the best of the debate last night, time wise?

Bernie Sanders won the night on this front, with (minutes and) seconds of speaking time during last night’s 2 1/2 hour debate.

Behind him? That’s a great showing for Ms Klobuchar, who has so far shown little ability to shine in early polls.

Former Kentucky governor defends last-minute child rapist pardon

Republican Matt Bevin lost re-election earlier this year, and delivered a last minute pardon of a man convicted of raping a 9-year-old.

He has now defended that action amid the furor, telling the talk radio host Terry Meiners that his pardon came after he reviewed the evidence of the case (or lack thereof, according to Mr Bevin).

“There was zero evidence,” he said.

“Both their hymens were intact,” he added. “This is perhaps more specific than people would want, but trust me. If you have been repeatedly sexually violated as a small child by an adult, there are going to be repercussions of that physically and medically.”

Steve Bannon has some thoughts on impeachment

The anti-globalist former Trump adviser has told Fox News he thinks that Mr Trump should want to have a “real” impeachment trial with witnesses, in order to deter accusations of a rigged system .

“It’s important for the history, the country … it’s important for the people that voted for President Trump, they believe in him,” Mr Bannon said on Thursday during an interview with the conservative network. “He did do anything wrong.”

He added: “He’ll be exonerated by the Senate in front of the American people and the world. And then in November, he’ll be vindicated at the ballot box. ”

Bloomberg is flaunting the debates

The former mayor of New York City is self-funding his campaign, which means he has no legitimate way of making it onto the debate stage given the hundreds of thousands of amounts required.

Nutter endorses Michael Bloomberg

I’m going to be honest, I just wanted to write that headline.

The Nutter in question, since you insist, is former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter.

“Mike Bloomberg is my kind of leader, ”the Pennsylvania politician says. “He cares about the drug crisis, gun violence, the environment and access to high-quality healthcare for all Americans.”

He is reportedly being tipped to serve as national political chair for Bloomberg’s still-developing but extremely well funded campaign, according toPolitico.

Tulsi Gabbard lying low after controversial impeachment vote

The Hawaii congresswoman, an increasingly rogue presence among the 15000 presidential field, cancelled a media session in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Thursday after causing an outcry when she was the only member of the House to answer “present” on Trump’s impeachment, rather than “yes” or “no”.

She explained herself in a Twitter video shortly after the vote but that did not stop #TulsiCoward trending shortly afterwards .

Here’s Hannah Selinger forIndy Voiceson an extraordinary publicity stunt that appears to have backfired on a candidate Hillary Clinton notoriously described as a “favorite of the Russians” on a podcast.

Bill Barr says attorney’s report on FBI won’t be ready ‘for quite a few months’ as representatives call for his resignation

Trump’s attorney general William Barr has said the man he appointed to turn in his own report into the origins of the FBI’s Russia investigation, Connecticut state attorney John Durham, will not be ready to do so “for quite a few months”.

“He is moving very diligently,” the attorney general told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum in an interview. “Just based on my general knowledge of the things that he is looking at or has to look at in the future,” he explained, “I would not think that he would be in a position for quite a few months.”

Barr was unhappy with the outcome of Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz’s report into the same subject, which was published on 9 December and exonerated the Obama-era bureau over allegations of liberal bias against the Trump campaign.

Eleven members of Congress, six from the House Judiciary Committee, have meanwhile signed a letter to Barr demanding both he and Durham resign. “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal …”
