The Democratic hierachy reportedly spent Sunday ensuring the party’s rank-and-file were unified in their messaging on impeachment, with Pelosi telling members via a conference call to proceed “not with negative attitudes towards [Trump], but a positive attitude towards our responsibility “.

House Democratic Caucus chairmanHakeem Jeffriesof New York meanwhile urged members to repeat the words “betrayal, abuse of power, national security” when talking about impeachment to hammer home their core theme to the American electorate.

Compare those efforts to ensure everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet with the confused response of Republicans , who –as we saw earlier– have veered from excusing Trump’s actions on the Ukraine call to attacking the opposition’s motives and targeting the whistleblower.

This howl of exasperation fromTom Bossert, Trump’s former homeland security adviser, towards Giuliani dwelling on conspiracy theories about the Bidens in Eastern Europe, says it all: “I am deeply frustrated with what he and the legal team is doing and repeating that debunked theory to the president. It sticks in his mind when he hears it over and over again. That conspiracy theory has got to go, they have to stop with that, it cannot continue to be repeated. “

” I honestly believe this president has not gotten his pound of flesh yet from past grievances on the 2016 investigation, “Bossert added.” If he continues to focus on that white whale, it’s going to bring him down. “

Asked about these remarks on ABC’sThis Weekon Sunday after Bossert’s appearance moments earlier, Giuliani snapped: “Tom Bossert doesn’t know what’s he’s talking about.”

Recent reports by the likes ofThe Washington PostandPoliticohave suggested that Senate majority leaderMitch McConnellcould simply choose not to hear impeachment charges against the president should they be passed by the House of Representatives.

Not so, according to a senior Republican Senate aideinterviewed byBloomberg, who points to the 1986 Dove memo, sent by then-Senate ParliamentarianRobert Doveto majority leaderHoward Greenein which he stated that “both the rules and the p recedents argue for a rapid disposition of any impeachment trial in the United States Senate. ”

The House of Representatives” must immediately be informed that the Senate is ready to receive the managers ‘whensoever the Senate shall receive notice’ of an impeachment “, according to Dove, whose investigation into precedent concluded that the upper chamber must hold an impeachment trial beginning at 1pm everyday (except Sundays) until a verdict is

At the time of Dove’s memo to Greene, the impeachment of ofAndrew Jacksonin 1868 was the only such procedure ever to have gone ahead.Richard Nixonresigned before he could suffer the indignities of the process in 1974 whileBill Clintonhas subsequently faced a trial in the Senate but was aquitted.

Pelosi, Schiff and Republican House minority leaderKevin McCarthyall took part in an interview with Scott Pelley on60 Minuteslast night to discuss the coming impeachment inquiry.

It didn’t go at all well for McCarthy, who appeared to learn just how damning Trump’s offending line was from Pelley during the course of their conversation on CBS.

That exchange again (as per the White House transcript), in case you need a refresher, went accordingly:

Zelensky: ” We are ready to continue to cooperate for the next specifically we are almost ready to buy more Javelins from the United States for defense purposes. “

Trump:” I would like you to do us a favorite though because ou r country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it. “

That exchange led Republican-turned-independent congressmanJustin Amash, anoutspoken opponent of Trump, to trash McCarthy.

The House speaker said the president did not appear to understand the immorality of his actions, that he had violated his oath of office to the Constitution and undermined the intergrity of American elections, when he first discussed it with her by phone early last week.

“We could not ignore what the president did, “She told Pelley. “He gave us no choice. So it wasn’t any change of mind. I always said we will follow the facts where they take us. And when we see them, we will be ready. And we are ready.”

Schiff, meanwhile, revealed that he intends to subpoena documents from Giuliani over the affair and that an invitation to explain himself to the folks on Capitol Hill could soon follow.

“We have a pretty good roadmap – thanks to the courage of this whistleblower,” he said. “The complaint sets out any number of witnesses, any number of documents that we need to seek.”

Asked whether the whistleblower will testify to his House Intelligence Committee, Schiff answered: “We have an agreement that he or she will testify, yes.”

Ukraine’s former prosecutor generalYuri Lutsenkohas meanwhiletoldhe previously advised Giuliani during meetings in New York and Warsaw that the Bidens had no case to answer.

“I said, ‘Let’s put this through prosecutors, not through presidents'”, said Lutsenko, who was ousted last month after Yelensky succeededPetro Poroshenkoas president.

“I told him I could not start an investigation just for the interests of an American official.”

“I went to his office and was there for several hours over three days,” Lutsenko said of the NYC meeting in January 2018. “He was certainly prepared.”

“He was wondering why the case was closed,” he said of Giuliani’s interest in the allegations against Burisma , which concerns non-payment of tax by the company’s oligarch owner, which were answered when the money owed was repaid.

)

“I had to tell him how law enforcement functions here.”

Speaking to the BBC, Lutsenko reaffirmed his stance: “I don’t know any reason to investigate Joe Biden or Hunter Biden according to Ukrainian law.”

Former British prime ministerDavid Cameronhas also defended Biden Sr’s apparent intervention in the matter while serving as US vice-president in 2015.

” The feeling was Ukraine could do a lot more [to fight corruption under Poroshenko] “, said Cameron on CNN, seeking to explain Biden’s interest in the country affairs at the time.

As for Joe Biden’s part in all of this, his campaign team has written to the major US TV networks appealing to them to stop booking Giuliani on the basis that he is terminally dishonest.

At this point, that might actually be a kindness to Trump’s personal attorney, who had planned to jet out to Kiev back in May in order to drum up interest in the allegations against the 2020 candidate and his sonHunter Bidenover their dealings with Burisma, a local gas company on which served on the board of directors between 2014 and 2019.

The former New York mayor has a habit of putting his foot firmly in his mouth.

The attornies called on DC lawmakers “to speak out in favor of whistleblower protection and reiterate that this is a protected system where retaliation is not permitted, whether direct or implied”.

Miller in particular came off badly in his exchange with Chris Wallace onFox News Sunday, insisting the story was “a partisan hit job” by a “deep state operative” only to be accused by his interrogator of giving “non-answers” and engaging in “obfuscation “.

Trump has been busy venting his frustration at the latest Democratic efforts to curtail his chaotic presidency on Twitter ever since House speakerNancy Pelosifirst announced the lower chamber’s impeachment manoeuvres on Tuesday evening.

Last night, the president came across a rant on Fox News from right-wing Christian pastorRobert Jeffress– who declared the opposition “don’t care if they burn down and destroy this nation” in the course of their bid to remove Trump – and gleefully copied it out in full.

Jeffress’s inflammatory contention that impeachment would “cause a Civil War like fracture in this Nation” was too much even for Trump’s fellow Republicans, with Illinois congressmanAdam Kinzingerbranding the rhetoric “beyond repugnant”.

(The Hill) ************************ (reports) that the Texas pastor has a history of shocking comments, calling Islam “a religion that promotes paedophilia” and a “heresy from the pit of hell.”

Jeffress has also called Mormonism a “cult” said it is not a true part of Christianity and that “you can’t be saved by being a Jew.”

Here’s Zamira Rahim’s report.
