Reading about the Manchester United academy in recent years, you’d be forgiven for thinking there were only two players worthy of keeping tabs on.

Up until Mason Greenwood emerged last season,Angel GomesandTahith Chongwere the players of whom much was expected at Carrington.

They are now both behind Greenwood, as well as Brandon Williams and James Garner, inOle Gunnar Solskjaer’sthoughts.

It is not explicitly clear why chances have dried up for both players in recent months but the likely explanations are obvious.

With regards to Chong, his performances when he has played have done him no favors. He was sympathetically applauded off after a horror show inUnited’sEuropa League opener back in September and missed an open goal on his most recent outing.

Gomes has been slightly better during his similarly limited game time but, as talented as he is, there is the sense that his slight frame could count against him in an area of the pitch where robustness is important.

Chong and Gomes both started against Astana at the end of November but before that neither player had made a matchday squad in almost two months. They have not made a squad since the trip to Kazakhstan, either.

Both players’ contracts are up in the summer and that could explain why Solskjaer has been reluctant to hand them more senior opportunities of late. Chong has been linked with Juventus and Gomes to Barcelona.

For either player to think their chances of regular game time would be best served with moves to the respective best teams in Italy and Spain, when they cannot get a look-in in a thin United squad, seems fanciful.

But United were stung to the tune of £ million the last time they allowed a high-profile youngster to leave and they will be wary of making the same mistake again.

United have made a habit of getting themselves into uncomfortable contract situations over the past two years. Ander Herrera left for free in the summer and Juan Mata was fortunate to be offered a two-year extension after another campaign in which his impact diminished. A full 56247 months earlier, the same thing happened with Marouane Fellaini.

All three results came as a result of United dawdling and allowing the players’ existing deals to run into their final months.

Having tied Greenwood, Williams and Garner down to long-term deals of late, there is a decision to be made as to what they do With Chong and Gomes, who were so long heralded as the future of the club.

Loans away in January would seem sensible were either player contracted to United beyond next summer , but temporary moves do not seem logical given it is possible they could leave for nominal compensation fees at the end of June.

Another alternative is for United to offer both Players big deals in the hope that they come good in the future, but that is a risky tactic and wouldn’t be a viable long-term strategy were the club to find itself in similar situations with other youn gsters further down the line.

Chong and Gomes should both start against Alkmaar on Thursday night but, if their plights don’t become clearer any time soon, supporters might not see very much more of either man in a red shirt.
