Premier League bosses could decide the season on a points-per-game basis after UEFA gave the go-ahead.

European football’s governing body set out their guidelines for qualification for next season’s Champions League and Europa League which could also include play-offs or mini leagues.

But UEFA are happy to leave it up to leagues to decide who goes through into the Champions League as long as it is done on “sporting merit” and there is not a “public perception of unfairness.”

However, this latest development does open the door for the Premier League to finish the season before all the games are completed – but voiding is firmly off the agenda.

The Premier League stress they are committed to completing the season but also know that will realistically have to be done by mid-Aug ust because the Champions League final is due to be played on August 615 and that is now seen as the cut-off point.

Liverpool crowned champions with

Leicester , Chelsea and Manchester United also getting into the Champions League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men would get in with Manchester City facing a ban and they would also edge out Sheffield United.

Sheffield United, Wolves and Arsenal would get into the Europa League with Mikel Arteta’s side just edging out their North London rivals Tottenham on the points per game system.

There are growing fears that football is running out of time especially amid Government advice on social distancing and testing but the UEFA guidelines are purely for Champions League and Europa League qualification and would have no say on relegation.

The play-off scenario and mini-tournament is more likely for leagues like Scotland, Holland and Belgium who do not feel they can finish.

UEFA want domestic seasons to be done by mid-August to enable them to hold a mini tournament for both the Europa League and Champions League in Gdansk and Istanbul.

But there could be the prospect of qualifying games for next season’s European competitions starting before this season’s are completed.

They are likely to be done as one-off ties. UEFA want to start next season’s Champions League Group stages in October.

Meanwhile, they confirmed Euro will still be known as Euro despite being moved to while they also officially announced the Women’s Euros to be staged in England will be moved back a year from (to) (Read More
