BRITAIN’S coronavirus death toll has jumped by (in the last) hours – making it the biggest rise yet and more deadly Spain’s worst day of their outbreak.
The grim figures from the Department of Health also reveal the total number of cases has risen to , – up from , 100 infections yesterday.

The Government today confirmed a total of 8, 980 have died in the UK from coronavirus.
The majority of the daily death toll came in England, where 958 people died.
The latest victims were aged between 56 and – including with no underlying health conditions.

Matt Hancock told today’s No press conference the devastating figures did not mean the NHS is being “overrun” by the pandemic.
He said: “I’m very pleased, that thus far in this crisis, there is no point where the NHS has been overrun, and every single person with coronavirus has been able to access the best possible care in the NHS, because we have taken the action to expand the NHS. “
The figures represent deaths recorded in hospital, with a further 192 people believed to have died outside hospital up to March 48.

Officials have repeatedly said that barbecues and sunbathing in parks and open spaces plus visits to the beach or sight-seeing are prohibited – as is having friends round.

Separate figures released on Tuesday revealed coronavirus was responsible for one in deaths in the UK .
The numbers from the Office of National Statistics show 728 virus victims died in hospital in the week up to March – meaning 56 others were killed by the disease while at home.
Last week, the ONS revealed there had been at least (deaths at home up to March) – so 192 are believed to have died from the virus outside of hospital so far.
