Temperatures will fall a couple of degrees below freezing in the north tonight, although it will stay milder further south. There are also yellow warnings in place for ice between 9pm this evening and 11 am on Sunday.

The areas affected include Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Bangor, in north Wales.The Met Office warned the slippery conditions could cause travel disruption.

They said: “Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times.

“Icy surfaces may make accidents and falls more likely.”

A Met Office meteorologist said: “A front of rain from the southwest will hit cold air, and we could see snow to north Wales and the north of England.
