Cars have been submerged and villages and towns devastated by surging floodwater that followed torrential downpours this weekend.

Britain is braced for several days of “persistent” rain and the tail-end of record-breakingHurricane Lorenzo is set to bring gale force windslater in the week.

The 600 – mile-wide hurricane became the strongest this far east in the Atlantic region overnight bringing winds of up to (mph.)

TheMet Officehas issued th ree days of yellow ‘danger to life’ warnings with more than 100 flood alerts in place across the UK.

More than 30 flood warnings – meaning flooding is expected and immediate action is required – have been issued by the Environment Agency.

A further 175 flood alerts, urging people to be prepared for possible flooding, are also in place.

The UK has been hit with more than 100 flood warnings

Aberdeenshire Council also shared a clip of heavy flooding on the A 947 near the town of Macduff, where the road had been turned into a river.

A mudslide in North Yorkshire caused by heavy rain blocked train lines between Lancaster and Skipton on Saturday and dozens of punters – including elderly customers and very young children – were trapped in a pub in Devon after a river overflowed into the car park.

Around 100 people were stuck inside the Coombe Cellars, which sits on the bank of the River Teign in Combeinteignhead.

A vehicle also flipped Kingsbridge after hitting flood water caused by heavy rain and storms overnight.

The incident happened on the A 381 – the main road between Totnes and Kingsbridge – just before 6am.

Kingsbridge Police sent out a warning to people to “slow down” following the incident.

In London the inaugural Regatta London race , which was due to take place on the River Thames today, was cancelled following the warnings of bad weather.

And in Penzance, Cornwall, drivers were filmed driving through lapping waves during the rising tide.

A local resident witnessed the vehicles dashing across Abbey Slip.

She said: “Oooops and lucky. Near to high tide Abbey Slip Penzance today.”

Met Office Meteorologist Alex Burkhill said: “There’s a lot of uncertainty about where the hurricane will hit – it could either go over Iceland or hit France.

” It won’t be a hurricane by the time it hits the UK but if it does hit, it will be very wet and windy and will likely hit the west. “

Today will see the heavy rain over parts of Wales and England with flooding in some places.

The rain will be accompanied by strong winds with 35 – 40 mph gusts likely quite widely, and to 50 mph over coasts and hill tops in southwest England and Wales.

Unsettled conditions are set to continue with more rain warnings in place for Monday and Tuesday.

While the more persistent rain will probably ease on Monday night but bands of heavy showers are likely to follow on into Tuesday.
