WEATHER forecasters have warned that snow and winds of up to 150 mph will batter Britain tonight and tomorrow with warnings of a possible risk to life.

Temperatures are set to plummet to -5C with up to 3cm snow set to fall on parts of Northern England and Scotland as more bad weather hits the UK.

The Met Office put a yellow weather warning in place until tomorrow as fierce gusts overturned a lorry on a bridge and a plane struggled to land.

“Be aware of the conditions. You have to be careful driving high sided vehicles, particularly lorries.

“We will see some snow in higher ground in Snowdonia and North Wales, anywhere north of there there are some fairly hefty showers around.

“That can lead to some icy stretches. If you are heading out on higher roads tomorrow morning be aware of some slippery conditions.

“Minus five is possible in parts of northern Scotland. We could see -2 or -3 in the Penines, Cumbria and towards Leeds.”

Gales are set to lash the country later in the week as a storm barrels in from the Atlantic across the UK.

Storm Ciara may be officially named by the Met Office this week.

The Met’s Simon Partridge added: “It is likely it will turn windier into the weekend. Some gales will be likely.

“We could see severe gales around the coast of the UK.”
