VAUXHALL Bridge was closed and police rushed to the scene in London after reports of a ‘suspicious vehicle’. Police confirmed the vehicle was “assessed by specialist officers”. “Two controlled explosions” were carried out, the Met Police confirmed.

Vauxhall Bridge in central London was closed and police officers rushed to the scene on Friday evening amid reports of a “suspicious vehicle”. Lambeth Borough Police confirmed they were in attendance after a vehicle was found “abandoned”. They said the vehicle was being “assessed by specialist officers”. Shortly after 6. 00 pm the vehicle was deemed “non-suspicious” by police and commuters were told the bridge would be reopening shortly, after sparking travel chaos in the capital. But, the Met Police also confirmed that there were “two controlled explosions” on Vauxhall Bridge.

At 4. 50 pm on Friday, a statement from Lambeth Borough Police read: “Police are in attendance in Vauxhall Bridge, SE1 after a vehicle was found abandoned just before 4pm.

“The abandoned vehicle is being examined by specialist officers as a precaution.

“No arrests have been made. Temporary road closures are in place. Thanks for your cooperation.”

Just over 10 minutes later , the police confirmed the vehicle was being “assessed by specialist officers”.

They added : “Vauxhall Bridge will remain closed whilst the vehicle is assessed by specialist officers.

“ Buses will be diverted and members of the public are advised to avoid the area. Thanks for your patience and cooperation. ”

At just after 6. 00 pm the vehicle was deemed “non-suspicious” by police and the bridge would be reopening shortly.

Lambeth Borough Police in a statement said: “Vehicle left abandoned on Vauxhall Bridge with hazard lights on and no driver has now been fully assessed by specialist officers and deemed non-

In the lead up to the police statement, one journalist on the ground reported just before 5. 40 pm the bomb squad had arrived at Vauxhall Bridge a short while ago.

At just after 5. 20 pm, above The Stag Theater said they had been evacuated due to a “suspect package on Vauxhall Bridge”.

They wrote on Twitter: “The theater has been evacuated by police due to a suspect package on Vauxhall Bridge. We are still planning to open at 6pm however we will update this feed as we receive updates. Thank you. ”

Warning commuters to the incident, TFL Traffic News wrote on Twitter:“ POLICE INCIDENT A 202 Vauxhall Bridge – The bridge is closed both ways due to a police incident. Traffic is slow southbound on Vauxhall Bridge Road from Warwick Way. ”

At just after 6. 25 pm, they added: “Vauxhall Bridge has now reopened following an earlier police incident. Lane one southbound on Vauxhall Bridge is restricted. ”

Witnesses commented on the incident as it unfolded and one claimed police had said the closure was “due to a suspicious vehicle

A video posted on social media showed police cars and vans at the scene with the bridge shut off.

Alongside the footage online, another online commentator wrote: “Vauxhall Bridge shut and area swarming with police. Worrying. ”

Another witness wrote:“ The police have closed Vauxhall Bridge and both roads to Vauxhall Bus station. There’s no way to even walk past Vauxhall, we’re trapped. “

The commentator later added: “Asked a police officer what was happening and he said he can’t comment on national security ow evacuating the bus station “.

Another witness questioned why red lights were flashing on the Mi6 building. They wrote on Twitter: “What’s happening at Vauxhall? Armed police normal police everywhere entrance and exit shut off? Red lights flashing on the Mi6 building? ”

One witness claimed they walked past Vauxhall Bridge just before it was closed, where they saw a car “full of boxes” just outside the Mi6 building.

Other witnesses claimed they were being moved away from Vauxhall Station and the surrounding area completely.

The incident caused travel chaos for commuters trying to get home on Friday evening. And South Western Railway said trains would not be stopping “at Vauxhall until further notice”.

They wrote on Twitter: “Trains will not be stopping at Vauxhall until further notice due to Police dealing with an incident at the station.”

SWR later added: “Trains will not be stopping at Vauxhall until further notice due to Police dealing with an incident near the station. Ticket acceptance in place with Southern between Clapham Junction and London Victoria and London Underground via any reasonable route. ”

Victoria line wrote on Twitter: “Vauxhall: At the moment exits 1 and 2 and the station are closed. This is due to an incident outside the station. We’ll update you when the station has re-opened. ”

At just after 6. 15 pm, train services resumed their routes.

SWR wrote: “Following police dealing with an earlier incident near the railway, train services will now call at Vauxhall station.”

Victoria line also said: “Vauxhall: the station is now open fully. We’re sorry for any disruption this has had to your travel this evening. ”
