West Ham thrash Bournemouth, Danny Ings shoots down Tottenham and Arsenal outplay Manchester United – Premier – talkSPORT.com, TalkSport


An action packed New Year’s Day saw first wins for David Moyes and Mikel Arteta at the helm of their respective clubs, West Ham and Arsenal.

There were also vital victories for Aston Villa, Southampton and Watford, while Brighton held Chelsea thanks to a spectacular goal and Manchester City handed Carlo Ancelotti a first defeat as Everton boss. Here’s what happened in the Premier League on January 1…

Arsenal 2-0 Man United

Arsenal outplayed Manchester United to give Arteta his first win in management.

The Gunners took the lead in the eighth minute as Nicolas Pepe justified his selection with a goal that rewarded an excellent start for the hosts.

Sead Kolasinac crossed from the left and the ball ran through to Pepe at the far post, who beat David De Gea from close range.

Arsenal dominated the early exchanges, with Pepe being denied by a post, Lucas Torreira firing narrowly wide and Alexandre Lacazette scuffing a glorious opportunity.

And they eventually got a deserved second in the 43 rd minute when De Gea kept out Lacazette’s flick but Sokratis reacted quickest to lash home from inside the six-yard box.

United never threatened to mount a comeback in the second half as Arsenal closed out a fully deserved win with an impressive performance which suggests they could be set for a very bright future under Arteta.

Pepe scored the first goal for Arsenal

West Ham 4- 0 Bournemouth

A perfect return for Moyes to West Ham as they thrashed Bournemouth at London Stadium – with three of the goals coming in the first half.

Mark Noble fired West Ham in front midway through the first half with a deflected effort from just outside the – yard box after Felipe Anderson and Robert Snodgrass had linked up well down the right.

Sebastien Haller doubled the Hammers’ score after 30 minutes as he volleyed Ryan Fredericks’ cross home with a cool scissor-kick finish from the center of the box.

West Ham were awarded a penalty after 40 minutes when Noble was brought down by Harry Wilson in the box after a slight touch.

David Moyes was appointed as West Ham manager on Sunday

The Hammers captain slotted the resulting spot-kick into the bottom-right corner as Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was sent the wrong way.

Felipe Anderson then added a fourth goal for Moyes’ side in the th minute.

The Hammers thought they were reduced to (men after) minutes as Aaron Cresswell was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ryan Fraser.

After a VAR check, the card was rescinded and Cresswell remained on the pitch with a yellow instead.

Mark Noble scored twice in West Ham’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth

Man City 2-1 Everton

Another home win for Pep Guardiola’s side as they cut the gap to Liverpool to points ahead of their match on Thursday.

City looked like they had taken the lead after minutes as Phil Foden slotted in Riyad Mahrez’s cross at the far post but the goal was ruled offside.

Jesus finally fired City in front six minutes after the break as he collected the ball from Ilkay Gundogan and took it inside the box before expertly curling it into the top corner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed wide as Everton had a good chance to equalise soon after but Jesus doubled City’s lead seven minutes later.

The Brazil striker thumped home Mahrez’s assist to finish off a great team goal at the near post, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance as he completed his brace

Richarlison halved the scoreline with less than 30 minutes remaining to pull Everton back into the game as he tapped Theo Walcott’s deflected cross home at the back post, but City held out.

Gabriel Jesus got both of Man City’s goals against Everton

Norwich 1-1 Crystal Palace

Norwich are seven points off safety in the Premier League as they conceded a late equaliser at home to Palace.

Todd Cantwell put the bottom side ahead after just four minutes despite the visitors appealing for handball.

Luka Milivojevic knocked the ball back into Cantwell’s path and the midfielder fired into the bottom corner for his sixth league goal of the season.

Conor Wickham denied the Canaries all three points, though, when he netted the equaliser for Palace five minutes from time – his first goal in three years.

Todd Cantwell scored after just four minutes against Crystal Palace

Newcastle 0-3 Leicester

No Vardy, no problem for Leicester.

Despite missing missing the Premier League’s leading goalscorer through injury, the Foxes eased to victory at St James ’Park, with the game wrapped up by half-time.

Ayoze Perez returned to haunt his former club as he scored the opener on minutes and then teed up James Maddison to score a long-range screamer three minutes later.

Newcastle had to play the final 40 minutes with ten men after Fabian Schar went off injured shortly after Steve Bruce had made his third and final sub and the hosts never threatened to mount a comeback.

Substitute Hamza Choudhury completed the rout with an excellent finish late on – his first goal in senior football.

Perez and Maddison fired the Foxes to a comfortable victory over Newcastle
Southampton 1-0 Tottenham

The Saints march further away from relegation danger as Danny Ings continued his impressive season to shoot down Spurs.

The striker made it 20 Premier League goals for the season when he flipped the ball over Toby Alderweireld with one foot and fired past Paulo Gazzaniga with the other on (minutes.)

Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside late in the second half and was injured in going for the ball, while the visitors also lost Tanguy Ndombele to injury.

On a nightmare afternoon for Jose Mourinho, the Spurs boss was booked after confronting one of the Southampton coaching staff on the bench and apparently trying to read his notes.

Ings was again the hero for Southampton at St Mary’s

Brighton 1-1 Chelsea

Alireza Jahanbakhsh earned Brighton their first ever league point against Chelsea as he scored a sensational overhead kick equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

Cesar Azpilicueta netted the opening Premier League goal of the new decade when the Blues took the lead in the tenth minute.

However, the Iran striker’s acrobatic finish punished Frank Lampard’s wasteful side who wound up fortunate to avoid defeat, with Kepa Arrizabalaga denying Neal Maupay late on.

Jahanbakhsh netted a stunning equaliser for the Seagulls

Burnley 1- 2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa overcame VAR controversy to claim a crucial 2-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor in their battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

After video technology ruledout an early Villa goal due to a marginal offside, Wesley and Jack Grealish both struck in the opening half to put the visitors in control.

Chris Wood pulled one back for Burnley with ten minutes left to set up a thrilling finale but Dean Smith’s side held out to claim only their second away win of the season and move out of the relegation zone.

Victory came at a cost for Villa, however, as they lost both Wesley and Tom Heaton to injury.

Wesley fires home the opener for Villa at Turf Moor

Watford 1-2 Wolves

Watford also gave their survival hopes a huge boost as they continued their resurgence under Nigel Pearson.

Gerard Deulofeu put the Hornets ahead with a fine finish on the half hour mark and Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled the hosts ’advantage four minutes into the second half.

Pedro Neto pulled a goal back on the hour mark and Watford were reduced to (men with) ***************************************************************************************************** minutes left when Christian Kabasele was dismissed for denying Diogo Jota a goalscoring opportunity, with VAR ruling it worthy of a red card after referee Andrew Madley had initally given him a yellow.

But Watford held on to claim their third win in four matches under Pearson and edge to within a point of safety.
