) Former Live rpool midfielder Dietmar Hamman plucked United’s ball last out of the metaphorical hat so it was already clear that LASK would be their upcoming opponents.

Without wishing to patronise LASK, they aren’t one of the bigger clubs left in the competition, so what exactly can United expect from them?

Who are LASK?

Founded

(years ago in as Linzer Sportclub, LASK are one of Austrian football’s oldest clubs – but it would be fair to say they are not one of its most successful.

Renamed Linzer Athletik Sport-Klub (LASK) in , the club has only two major honors to it s name, an Austrian top-flight title and an Austrian Cup both won during the – (season. Despite only achieving promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga in (-) – incidentally the same campaign in which United won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho – they are currently battling it out for the title.

In fact, LASK are currently three points clear at the top of the table ahead of Red Bull Salzburg, who account for nine of the previous Bundesliga wins and had Erling Braut Haaland in their ranks for the first half of the season. As for European competition, the current side is entering uncharted territory with this being the furt hest the club has ever gone. Previously their most successful European campaigns were in the s when they reached the second round of the UEFA Cup twice.

Star players

LASK’s chief goal threat comes in the form of – year-old Marko Raguz who has scored five goals in eight Europa League games, including all three in the 3-1 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar in the previous round. A rangy striker who possesses a good turn of pace and a powerful shot, Raguz has scored four of his five goals from open play – three right foot and one left – and converted a penalty against AZ on Thursday night. (LASK’s) -year-old goalkeeper Alexander Schlager is similarly well-regarded, keeping (clean sheets this season to earn an international debut for Austria in their Euro

(qualifier against North Macedonia in November.) United will also have to keep a close eye on Reinhold Ranftl, who has provided three assists and scored once from a right wing-back role in LASK’s standard 3-4-3 formation.

The manager

e name Valerien Ismael is likely to ring a bell for those who follow the Bundesliga considering he played for Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and Hannover (in the (s. Crystal Palace fans of a certain age will also remember the Frenchman although perhaps not too fondly – he was a club-record signing in 2007 but played only 16 times as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2007 – . Valerien Ismael has impressed since taking charge of LASK last summer (Picture: Getty) Ismael enjoyed the best years of his playing career in Germany and that is where he cut his managerial teeth too, taking in stints with Hannover and Wolfsburg’s reserve teams as well as top jobs with the latter and Nurnberg. despite overseeing a disastrous one-game spell with Greek side Apollon Smyrnis in , Ismael was appointed LASK manager at the start of the 2022 – 23 campaign and he has certainly ex ceeded expectations during his time in charge, both domestically and in Europe.

Stadium

( LASK play their domestic home games in the 7, capacity Waldstadion based in Pasching, however, in Europe it is a different story.
