Although the name is the same, “Duck Detective” has nothing to do with the childhood cartoon “Duck Detective”. In the game, players need to play the role of a poor duck detective facing divorce. He is commissioned to go to the bus company to investigate a lunch theft incident. Eventually, he is involved in a bizarre case and finds the Salami Bandit behind it. Despite his difficult life, he is still a cultured duck. He not only published his own detective novels, but also often bursts out literary golden sentences, such as: “The stained carpets and peeling wallpaper exuded a stench of stale coffee and abandoned dreams.”
The overall process of the game is not long, and it can generally be completed in one or two hours. Players need to collect clues by talking to characters and investigating items, and “fill in the blanks” in their detective notes to complete the inferred story line. Playing it in one breath is like participating in an interactive movie in person. Although it is a skit-level game, “Duck Detective” is not vague in the details. There are many interactive elements in the scene, and you will kick over the trash can when you walk past it (there is even an achievement related to this); the cutscenes will also broadcast small “popular science” Easter eggs about ducks.
The game is not difficult, and even without Chinese, the plot is not difficult to understand. If you are stuck in a logical vortex, the game also provides a hint function, but it will not tell you the answer directly. Instead, it will guide players to get more information and make correct inferences through the duck detective's self-talk.
The cute duck detective looks like a duck from a distance, but under the magnifying glass, he is actually a decadent duck. The voice acting is full of the feeling of a “middle-aged uncle”, and this contrast is very interesting. In addition, each character in the game has distinct characteristics and memorable points, and you must never judge a person (animal) by his appearance. In just a few hours of game flow, you can easily remember each character in your mind and carefully deduce the truth of the case in the end.
Although it may sound a bit ridiculous to buy a word-filling puzzle game without Chinese translation just for the purpose of “learning English”, while playing Duck Detective, I did look up and write down the words I didn't know when I encountered them occasionally, which, to some extent, contributed to my English ability. I think as a small-scale game, it is worth buying and experiencing it when it is on sale, and I believe it will definitely live up to your expectations.
