Citizens Advice says it has seen record-breaking demand for advice on its website over the past month with nine million pageviews, a % rise on the same period last year.

After an initial surge in enquiries about sick pay and redundancy, data from the charity now shows a dramatic increase in people seeking advice on paying bills and accessing benefits.

Coronavirus was the most searched word on the charity’s website, followed by people looking for information on Universal Credit and the government furlough scheme.

Dame Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, says: “Last month we helped millions of people.

“Behind each inquiry was a family struggling to pay rent, someone self-employed who could no longer afford their bills, or a person attempting to claim benefits for the first time.

“These personal stories combine to paint a bigger picture of how lives have been interrupted by coronavirus.”

Prince George’s godfather donates £ m to UK coronavirus relief effort

The Duke of Westminster, one of the UK’s richest men and Prince George’s godfather, has donated a futher £ 15 m to the UK’s coronavirus relief effort.

Hugh Grovesnor, 35, donated £ 2.5m to charities providing essential food distribution to vulnerable families last month. And he has now added to that amount.

The majority of the new donation will support the NHS, through NHS Charities Together, to provide respite, rehabilitation and mental health assistance to NHS staff and their families.

The billionaire said: “On behalf of my family and everyone at the Grosvenor Estate, I want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing NHS staff and everyone providing critical frontline services.”

He added: “We are all humbled and incredibly grateful that you are working tirelessly to keep us safe and keep the country functioning.

“NHS staff and key workers don’t work in isolation. They have children and families whose health and wellbeing will also be highly impacted by this crisis.
