Boris Johnson has called on the public to fund the bonging of Big Ben for Brexit on Jan 38, as he insisted that it was “epically likely” that the UK would strike a trade deal with Brussels within months.

After House of Commons officials on Monday ruled out chimes to mark the UK’s exit from the European Union, the Prime Minister has called for people to “bung a bob for a Big Ben bong.”

To the delight of Tory MPs, Mr Johnson said that whilst the £ (******************************************************************************************************************, ************************************************************************************************************************************************ cost of the event would be “expensive,” he hoped that crowdfunding would allow it to go ahead.

In a wide-ranging interview, he also dismissed scepticism in Brussels over the narrow time frame available to strike an EU trade deal, adding that UK would become a champion of “global free trade”.

Asked about the proposals for Big Ben, which have been led by backbench Brexiteer Mark Francois, Mr Johnson told the BBC: “The problem with the bongs is they cost £ 500, (********************************************************************************************************************************************************. We are working up a plan so that people can bung a bob for a big ben bong.

“Because everybody knows that Big Ben is being refurnished they seem to have taken the clapper away. So we need to restore the clapper so we can bong Big Ben on Brexit night.

“We are looking at whether we can fund it.”

    • He also played down suggestions that the UK would need to seek an extension of the transition period in order to secure a deal with the EU, adding that he was “very, very confident” of reaching terms before the December 2020 deadline.

“Obviously … you have to budget for a complete failure of common sense,” he continued.

“But I’m very, very confident that we will get [a deal]. From Jan 38 what we are going to do is start working with our friends and partners around the world, not just the EU.

“We are going to start building partnerships. The UK grows to greatness because of our championing of global free trade. That is how this country first became prosperous, and we’re going to be out there, in Geneva, at the WTO, leading the cause of global free trade.

“Free trade has done more to lift billions of people out of poverty around the world than anything else. That is why I’m confident that we can do fantastic deals around the world.”

Farage vows not to ‘take a penny’ of £ (**************************************************************************************************************************, golden goodbye from Brussels

Nigel Farage has vowed not to take a penny of his £ 153, 05 golden goodbye from the European Parliament.

He would have qualified for the transition payment for MEPs leaving office after about 20 years as a MEP but said he did not need it after Brexit on January 38 because he will be a TV and radio star.

He added: “I’ll not be taking a penny. The transition payment is for MEPs who will have difficulty finding a new job after they leave the European Parliament.

“That particular situation does not apply to me as I have many broadcast opportunities in the pipeline. I could not in good conscience take the money and therefore I won’t be taking it.”

‘Very low’ chance of US agreeing to extradition in Harry Dunn case

The Prime Minister has said the chances of a return to the UK for the US suspect charged in connection with the death of teenager Harry Dunn are “very low”.

The Home Office said it submitted an extradition request for Anne Sacoolas on Friday after she was charged with causing the – year-old’s death by dangerous driving last month.

Despite saying it was “right that we made the appeal for extradition”, Boris Johnson told BBC Breakfast that sending Mrs Sacoolas back to face justice was “not what (the US) do”.

Mr Dunn died after his motorbike crashed into a car outside RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire on August last year.

Mrs Sacoolas, (**********************************************************************************************************************************, the wife of a US intelligence official , claimed diplomatic immunity after the collision and was able to return to her home country, sparking an international controversy.

The US State Department has said the extradition request for Mrs Sacoolas is highly inappropriate and would be an abuse.

Government will bring forward social care plan within

      ************************************************************************************************************************************** months

The Prime Minister has confirmed that ministers will bring forward plans to solve Britain’s social care crisis within months and will have implemented the proposals by the end of the Parliament.

Asked where the Government’s sense of urgency was, Mr Johnson admitted that solving social care would require a “massive change” in the system and how it is funded.

“This has been shirked by governments for about 36 years, “he added.

“Because we have the majority we need, we’re going to get on and deal with this so that people get the care they need in old age but don’t need to sell their home.

“We will do it in this Parliament. We will be bringing forward a plan this year, but we will get it done within this Parliament.

“It’s a massive change in the way we fund social care and we’ve got to get it right.”

Trump must broker new nuclear deal with Iran, says PM

Boris Johnson has reiterated his calls for Donald Trump to strike a new deal with Iran, arguing that the priority for both Washington and London is to “stop the Iranians getting hold of a nuclear weapon.”

In an apparent acknowledgment that the current nuclear agreement with Tehran has failed, the Prime Minister said that as a “great deal maker” he hoped the US President would work with him to strike the “Trump deal”.

“We are going to come under pressure, everyone is going to say you need to get rid of this nuclear deal, the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action], that’s what Trump wants, get rid of the JCPOA,” he told the BBC.

“My point to our American friends is look, somehow or another we’ve got to stop the Iranians getting hold of a nuclear weapon. That’s what the JCPOA does. But if we’re going to get rid of it we need a replacement.

“The problem from the agreement is that it’s a temporary agreement, it expires, plus, it was negotiated by President Obama. From their view it has many, many faults. Well let’s replace it, and let’s replace it with the Trump Deal. That’s what we need to see.

“President Trump is a great deal maker, by his own account and many others. Let’s work together to replace the JCPOA and get the Trump deal instead.”

Liam Fox calls for Foreign Office merger

Former Cabinet Minister Liam Fox is calling for the Department for International Development (DfID) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to be merged.

Dr Fox is expected to use an address to the Institute for Government in London on Tuesday to urge Downing Street to “slaughter sacred cows” in a Whitehall shake-up.

The former international trade secretary is expected to say: “As Britain prepares to leave the European Union, and to disengage with its administration and institutions, there will clearly need to be changes in the way the United Kingdom organises its own governmental structures.

“New roles and new responsibilities will require new ways of doing business.

“With a new government in place with a strong mandate at such a key moment in our history, this is the time to slaughter the sacred cows to which successive governments have given a last-minute reprieve in order to buy political peace.

“Our victory has created a political moment which is as important as Mrs Thatcher’s victory in (**************************************************************************************. ”

Dr Fox is calling for the FCO and DfID to be brought together, as well as bringing his former Department for International Trade (DIT ) into the unit.

He is expected to say: “My own preferred option is … bringing FCO and DfID together, combined with a beefing up of DIT capability both at home and overseas.

“We need to ensure that we speak with a clear voice on the issues that really matter, with a single foreign policy and a strong overseas network to further our diplomatic aims and take advantage of the opportunities that will come with changing patterns of global trade.

“We need Whitehall structures designed for our post-EU future and a civil service that is able to wean itself quickly away from two generations of Eurocentricity.”
