EDPB position up "pay or allow profiling for advertising"

Chiara Ponti, Privacy Plumber, reported to us plumbers the EDPB's “Opinion 08/2024 on Valid Consent in the Context of Consent or Pay Models Implemented by Large Online Platforms”: https://www.edpb.europa.eu/news/news/2024/edpb-consent-or-pay-models-should-offer-real-choice_en.

I referred to the press release of April 17, 2024.

Some salient points in my opinion:

– refers to the “large” online platforms, therefore certainly to Facebook and perhaps not to Corriere della Sera;

– in fact it refers to services with a “promising” role or is decisive for participation in a social life or professional networks;

– requires proposing a third alternative, in addition to “pay or give consent”, for example with advertising without profiling.

I say that since Meta activated “consent or pay”, I no longer access Facebook (I had already done so very little for a few years) and Instagram. During the short waits, instead of watching previews on Netflix and Disney+, judo techniques, my friend Dulio's drawings, dessert recipes and walks near Milan, I read the newspaper online and that generally, unfortunately, puts me in a bad mood. Here is the only negative point of having given up these social networks.

What do you think?
