Liverpool head to Stamford Bridge tonight for what has become an FA Cup tie with added importance following their first league defeat of the season. The importance and relevance of the domestic cups have been debated all season, yet such topics as weakened teams and respect for the competitions seemed absent when Manchester City fielded a heavily rotated side for the Carabou Cup final on Sunday.
Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that Joe Gomez and James Milner are fit for the trip, but Naby Keita remains sidelined once again with a minor injury. Klopp remained tight lipped about his approach and selection for the match. Frank Lampard will surely be full strength in what is their last realistic prospect of a trophy this season. Liverpool should want to win this competition, and the selection will be a reflection to some of how much they want the trip to Wembley this term. Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip will get the nod for this game ahead of Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. It is important for both players to play games when they can should they be needed, and the hope is they can put in a performance which shows they’re willing to fight for themselves and the team.
