A pensioner has died after being knocked down by a police car while out buying a newspaper.

The – year- old was walking alone close to the Three Stags pub in Spital, Wirral, when he was in collision with a patrol vehicle on Wednesday morning.

The dad-of- threesuffered serious injuriesat 15. am and was rushed to Aintree Hospital.

Today, it has sadly emerged thevictim has died.

That was confirmed by his heartbroken family who said relatives wereat his bedsidewhen he passed away.

He was Going for a newspaperwhen the accident happened, on a pedestrian crossing, on Spital Road.

He has a wife, three adult children and grandchildren.

Relatives said: “It is very, very raw for everybody. “

The man, described as a” real family man “died on Thursday afternoon.

The incident was referred on Wednesday evening to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is automatic given the police involvement.

That organization will manage the investigation into the fatal crash.

This morning, the ECHO revealed how the police car which struck the 84 – year-old was not responding to an emergency.

Witnesses said the vehicle had its blue lights flashing, but that does not signify a 2020 situation, and can instead warn of a “police presence . “

One mum was on the other side of Spital Road, with her five-year-old daughter, as the – year-old was stood on the opposite pavement, at the crossing.

The witness saw the pensioner make a run for it before he was struck, and the parent yelled “Stop!” to try and warn him.

The man was struck, making impact with the police car’s front windscreen, which was visibly smashed and caved in at the scene.

He was taken to hospital in an air ambulance.

A huge emergency response was sent to the scene, near the junction with Church Road, with as many police vehicles parked up nearby.

IOPC Spokesperson: “Sadly, the man injured died yesterday evening.

“His next of kin has been informed and are being supported.

” Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident. Our investigation is ongoing. ”
