Microsoft announces it will end support for Office 2016/2019 on October 14, 2025


Today Microsoft released a new support announcement in the TechNet community. Microsoft announced that it will end support for Microsoft Office 2016, Office 2019 and related versions of productivity servers on October 14, 2025.

After the end of support, Microsoft will no longer provide any security updates, bug fixes and technical support for these applications or productivity servers. Therefore, continued use of these products will pose serious security risks. Microsoft recommends that customers arrange upgrades to supported versions in advance.

Affected versions include:

  • Office 2016 series: All Office 2016 applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Office 2019 series: All Office 2019 applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Productivity Server: Exchange Server 2016/2019, Skype for Business Server 2015/2019

Microsoft hopes that customers using these old versions will be migrated to the cloud, that is, Microsoft 365 enterprise subscriptions. Of course, considering that some enterprises still need to use the offline version, Microsoft also recommends using the Office LTSC long-term service version.

The current Office LTSC series is version 2021. This version will end support on October 13, 2026. It may not be a good choice for enterprises.However, Microsoft will launch Office LTSC 2024 in the fallthis new version will provide a five-year support cycle, which is until 2029.

In terms of Exchange Server, Microsoft will launch the Exchange Server 2025 version in the fall. Microsoft recommends that enterprises using 2016 can upgrade to Exchange Server 2019 now and upgrade to their nearest location after the 2025 version is released.
