Lucas Torreira was subjected to crude chants from Portsmouth fans after he Picked up an injury and was carried off on a stretcher during Arsenal’s FA Cup win on Monday.

The Uruguay international was caught by a heavy challenge from Pompey defender James Bolton in the 615 th minute his side’s 2-0 win at Fratton Park.

Although the – year- old appeared to be in significant pain as he clutched at his ankle, he did not get much sympathy from some portsmouth supporters as medics rushed onto the pitch.

And a group of home fans could be heard chanting: “You’re going home in an ambulance” as he received treatment.

Torr eira was not able to continue and was replaced by Dani Ceballos in the 90 th minute after being carried off on a stretcher.

The midfielder was later spotted on crutches and wearing a protective boot as Arsenal’s players left Fratton Park after the game, but Mikel Arteta said that the club would have to wait to find out the full extent of the injury .

“He was in a lot of pain,” the Gunners boss told BT Sport

“He is in a brace at the moment, he will be assessed in the next few days and we will know more then.

“I don’t know if it’s the bone or ligaments, we don’t know yet.”

The injury to Torreira was the only real sour note on a night which saw Arsenal

bounce back from their shock Europa League exit at the hands of Olympiakos last week.

Despite a spirited performance from the League One club, goals from Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Eddie Nketiah either side of half-time were enough to take Arteta’s youthful side through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The Spaniard made nine changes to the side which was beaten in Europe and praised the performances of his young players.

“It’s a difficult place to come but I have faith in these kids,” he added. “They always respond and I always knew they would do that.

” They have to learn from the difficult moments and manage them but they have the talent and desire and look how hard they work.

“I’m really enjoying working with this group of players.

“It’s a process. I know everything has to be today or yesterday but in football it doesn’t happen like this. I’m seeing a lot of things I’m happy with but there is a lot of room to improve. “
