SALT LAKE CITY – Another year and another USC Trojans victory over Utah at the Coliseum.

Coming off an overtime loss to BYU, the Trojans narrowly escaped with a victory, defeating the visiting No. 10 Utah Utes 30 – 23 in a chippy

Utah nearly came back to win the game, but the Trojans staved off defeat to claim another home victory against the visiting South Division

USC lost starting quarterback Kedon Slovis on the second play of the game as Utah’s Leki Fotu pressured him and tackled him to the ground as he got a pass off. Slovis was out for the remainder of the game as a result of the hit.

But backup quarterback Matt Fink entered the game and immediately set the tone with a quick drive that was capped off with a 29 – yard touchdown pass to Tyler Vaughns for the first score of the game. Fink again orchestrated a quick scoring drive that was capped off with a 31 – yard toss to Amon-Ra St. Brown after Utah’s Devin Lloyd narrowly missed bring him down with a sack.

Fink continued the scoring in the second half with a 78 – yard bomb downfield to Michael Pittman for a touchdown to give the Trojans an 11 – point lead early in the third quarter. Fink finished the night throwing for 351 yards and two touchdowns on 21 – of – 30 passing.

The Trojans struggled to establish a run game and were negative 15 yards at the halftime break. But fortunately for the Trojans, the passing game was open season against Utah’s defensive backs that struggled to contain the Air Raid offensive attack. The Trojans finished the night with 381 total yards, with 368 yards coming in the passing game.

Utah got its first score of the night on a 17 – yard rushing play from backup running back Devonta’e Henry-Cole in the first quarter, who found a crease off the edge and trotted in for touchdown. Starting running back Zack Moss later left the game in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury. He did not return for the remainder of the night.
